V8 Supercars could be capable of a lot more but are limited. They also must use 98 octaine ethanole blended fuel.

Very very true. I spoke to Larry Perkins 3 or 4 years ago and he said that the HMS V8 used in the Commodores will safely rev to 8'000RPM (as run in NASCAR) and he thought that we would see 750BHP without too much risk of self destruction. However our rules in the V8 series tightly controls a lot of areas in the engines in the interest of cost. Larry also said that in the old Group A days, it was not uncommon to rev the old 4.9 litre V8 run in the Commodores to 9'000 rpm in qualifying. He showed me pictures of a block with the 2 rear cylinders split off from the block. He said that they were like hand-granades. The engines would just let go without any warning. It was partialy fixed with the VN Group A with the block having more strengthening ribs. Imagine a Holden V8 at 9'000 RPM...

Richo : Agreed that the aussie builders are up there with the best, but power figures on v8 supercars is rather locked down. They have certain control components that severely limit the power they can produce. From memory the amount of spark advance they can run is the main limiting factor. Give them free range and we'd be seeing close to 1000hp like that carby-fed Nascars.

Imagine the howls of protest if this car won the 2010 Bathurst. Ford and Holden do themselves an injustice by not competiting against cars like this. I would actually watch car racing in this country if Ford and Holden had enough balls to take on other brands. Scrap the tired and boring Ford vs Holden racing and develop a new format.

So 600BHP out of a 5.6ltr V8..

..V8 Supercars make 650+BHP from 0.6ltr less capacity and "dinosour" spec pushrods... maybe those Aussie engine builders aren't actually that bad eh?

Reminds me of how Fred Gibson used to get 100BHP more out of his GTR's in Australia then the Nismo engineers could get out of their Jap GTR's
