Renault-Nissan strengthens electric relationship with Andalusia

Renault-Nissan has signed its second agreement in Spain to promote the development and implementation of electric vehicles in the region.

The Alliance today secured a “protocol of intentions” with the government of Andalusia (an autonomous community in the south of Spain) to strengthen both PASENER 2007-2013 (the Andalusian Sustainable Energy Plan) and Renault-Nissan’s zero emissions strategy.

The PTA (Andalusian Technological Park) will house an EV pilot study, which will comprise a series of simulations to define energy, recharging points and battery life needs for the large-scale development of EVs

The city of Málaga will receive a small fleet of EVs and electric infrastructure, furthering the Andalusian Government’s “Smartcity” electric car program.

The agreement also has a strong educational emphasis, aiming to promote EV options to businesses and private buyers and developing incentives for their purchase, and running training workshops for mechanics and technicians to better understand the technology.

Andalusia and Renault-Nissan already have a strong and successful alliance, with 1100 workers employed at the Renault transmission factory which last year produced 755,370 units – 30 percent of Renault’s total global production.

The agreement follows an earlier commitment between Renault-Nissan and Spain, who announced Barcelona would play host to its own EV fleet and almost 200 recharging points.

Today’s is the latest announcement in the strengthening relationship between the alliance and Spain.

Last year it was revealed that Renault factories in Spain had been awarded two new models and an engine for 2011 to 2013, including the car derived from the Twizy Z.E. Concept which will make it the first EV to undergo large-scale production in Spain.

Its commitment to the region has seen the popularity of its cars blossom, with the Renault Group enjoying a 10.9 percent market share in 2009.
