2018 Kia ‘Stonic’ spied again

A new city-friendly crossover, rumoured to be branded as the Kia Stonic, has been spied undergoing testing in Europe.

The new model will sit below the Sportage in Kia's SUV range, and will share its underpinnings with Hyundai's new global sub-Tucson crossover, which was last spied in January.

This latest Stonic prototype, captured at closer range, is wearing a bit less camouflage than the car spotted in the snow in February. We can now see the shape of the car's headlights, its wheel arch protectors, the LED rear tail-light graphics, and its short front and rear overhangs.

Power, at least in Europe, is understood to come from a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but all-wheel drive may be offered as well.

A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is said to be on the cards too.

Rumour has it that the Stonic, or whatever it will be known as, will be launched at the Frankfurt motor show, which takes place in September.

If that's the case, the crossover won't go on sale locally until early 2018, and will likely be pitched against the Honda HR-V, Holden Trax, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR.
