Toyota FT-86 G Sports Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon

The hotly anticipated Toyota FT-86 is set to rekindle the era of lightweight, affordable performance coupes, although the absence of a turbocharger has left even the purest fans slight numb.

Although it seems Toyota may have been teasing us all along, having announced plans to roll out a series of tuned models under the G Sports namesake for the Japanese market.

Specifically, this means a Subaru-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged production version of the FT-86 Concept is certainly on the cards, developed in cooperation with Toyota's tuning and racing partner, GAZOO.

To prove that this isn't just a one-off showcase to wow the crowds at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota has also gone to the trouble of enlisting the help of the Gran Turismo 5 rendering engine to show off the FT-86 G Sports Concept in three dimensions.

Similar to the pedigree bestowed upon STI variants from the Subaru stable, the G Sports version boasts pumped wheel arches, carbon-fibre hood and air vents, redesigned front and rear bumpers and an oversized rear wing.

Its appearance is rounded off by a new set of 19-inch wheels shod in Potenza performance rubber, along with Recaro pews inside.
