2017 Volkswagen Golf 7.5: Australian details

Fresh look, more value and new tech for hatch, wagon, Alltrack

Initial Australian specifications for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf '7.5' range have been detailed ahead of its July launch. Pricing, the car maker's local arm says, is still to be finalised.

For the new model year, the Golf hatch and wagon range receive a number of added features, along with the availability of new technologies normally reserved for high-end luxury cars.

Headline updates include the standard fitment of the 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine across the regular hatch and wagon range, with the 92kW version discontinued.

The 110kW/340Nm turbo-diesel remains available in the top-spec Highline trim for the hatch, while the more capable Golf Alltrack wagon offers the option of a 132kW/280Nm 1.8-litre turbo petrol or a 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

Kicking off the range is the 110TSI, which comes fitted as standard with air-conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, leather multi-function steering wheel, an 8.0-inch 'Composition' touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear-view camera, and multi-function driver's display.

Also standard is Volkswagen's Extended Electronic Differential Lock  (XDL), city autonomous emergency braking (AEB), 16-inch alloy wheels, 16-inch 'Hita' alloy wheels, LED daytime-running lights, LED tail-lights, seven airbags, driver fatigue monitor, along with multi-collision brake assist.

The entry-level Golf features a standard six-speed manual transmission, with a seven-speed DSG available as an option.

Next up is the 110TSI Trendline, available in hatchback or wagon bodies. In addition to the features included in the 110TSI, the Trendline gets automatic headlights and wipers, automatically-dimming rear-view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, 16-inch 'Toronto' alloy wheels, manual front seat lumbar adjustment, rear centre armrest with cup holder. The wagon version gets black roof rails and a luggage partition net.

A six-speed manual is again the standard shifter for the hatch, with a seven-speed DSG available at extra cost. The self-shifter is offered as standard with the wagon.

Third in the range is the 110TSI Comfortline, which adds dual-zone climate control with Air Care filtration, 'Discover Media' 8.0-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation, 17-inch 'Dijon' alloy wheels, 'Comfort' front seats, chrome interior and exterior highlights, storage drawer under the front passenger seat, and a 12V outlet in the boot. The wagon also gains chrome roof rails.

At the top of the regular hatch and wagon range is the 110TSI Highline, with the 110TDI Highline also available for the hatchback.

Over the Comfortline, the Highline gains front fog lights, 'Comfort Sport' front seats, vienna leather-appointed upholstery with heated front seats, electrically-adjustable driver's seat with memory function and electric lumbar support, power folding mirrors with memory function, keyless entry and start, and 17-inch 'Karlskoga' alloy wheels.

There are more lashings of chrome throughout the interior and exterior, along with ambient lighting, LED reading lights and front footwell lighting, carpet floor mats, LED headlights for low- and high beam, colour multifunction driver's display and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Trendline, Comfortline and Highline trims are offered with the Driver Assistance Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, park assistant, proactive occupant protection system, and selectable driving modes with personalisation function.

Comfortline and Highline models can be optioned with the Infotainment Package, which includes the 12.3-inch Active Info digital instrument display, Discover Pro 9.2-inch satellite navigation system with gesture control and voice control (pictured above), along with a 400W Dynaudio Excite audio system with 10-channel digital amplifier and subwoofer.

Highline variants can also be specified with the sporty R-Line package, which adds sportier R-Line exterior and interior treatments, 18-inch 'Sebring' alloy wheels, progressive steering, sports suspension and privacy glass.

Golf Alltrack

Those wanting a little more off-road ability can instead choose the Golf Alltrack wagon, which now offers two trims - Alltrack and Alltrack Premium.

New to the range is the entry-level Alltrack 132TSI, which comes standard with the 132kW/280Nm turbocharged petrol engine, sending drive to all-four wheels through a six-speed DSG transmission.

Standard equipment on the base Golf Alltrack includes dual-zone climate control with Air Care filtration, keyless entry and start, leather multifunction steering wheel, selectable driving modes with an additional off-road mode, 8.0-inch Composition infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There's also LED interior ambient lighting, rear-view camera, 17-inch 'Valley' alloy wheels, front fog-lights, automatic headlights and wipers, automatically-dimming rear-view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, LED tail-lights and LED daytime-driving lights.

The Golf Alltrack Premium is offered with either the 132TSI turbo-petrol or the 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine - the latter coming standard with a new seven-speed wet-clutch DSG transmission.

On top of the Alltrack's standard inclusions, the Premium adds Comfort Sport front seats, vienna leather-appointed upholstery with heated front seats, 8.0-inch Discover Media infotainment system with satellite navigation, LED headlights with dynamic cornering lights, colour multifunction driver's display, and carpet floor mats.

All Alltrack models are available with the optional Driver Assistance Package, which adds the 12.3-inch Active Info Display digital instrument cluster with off-road configuration, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, park assist and a proactive occupant protection system.

Meanwhile, the Alltrack Premium can be specified with the Sport Luxury and Infotainment packages. The former includes 18-inch 'Kalamata' alloy wheels, steering-mounted paddle shifters, panoramic glass sunroof, electrically-adjustable driver's seat with memory with electric lumbar support, power folding door mirrors with memory and privacy glass.

Ticking the Infotainment Package box adds the 12.3-inch Active Info Display digital instrument cluster with off-road configuration, 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system with satellite navigation, gesture control and voice control, along with the Dynaudio Excite 400W audio system with 10-channel amplifier and subwoofer.

Gloss paint options include Pure White for all models, while Alltrack variants also offer Tornado Red as a standard hue. Metallic options include Tungsten Silver and Iridium Grey across all models, with hatch and wagon-specific choices adding Turmeric Yellow and Atlantic Blue. Finally, Deep Black pearl is also available on all models including the Alltrack range.

Pricing across the range along with option packages will be announced in the coming weeks, while details of the performance-oriented GTI and R models will be detailed later on ahead of an August launch.
