2010 European Motor Show kicks off in Brussels

The 88th European Motor Show in Brussels opens today with the theme “Heading for tomorrow” and a clear environmental and technological emphasis.

Six cars are making their world premieres including the MINI One Cabrio, Hyundai i30 EcoSport, Ford S-MAX and Galaxy, Fiat Doblo and the Citroen C-Zero.

The MINI One Cabrio will join the European line-up with an efficient 72kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine which uses 5.7 litres/100km and emits 133g/km CO2.

Electromechanical steering and stability control headline the standard features for the entry-level convertible, while fun personalisation options include the “Openometer” which records the amount of time spent driving with the roof open.

The Hyundai i30 EcoSport, as the name suggests, aims to give drivers the best of both worlds.

The Eco bit comes thanks to a new 90kW 1.6-litre diesel which – coupled with start/stop technology – delivers fuel economy of 4.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 113g/km.

The Sport suffix is justified by the racy new grille and body kit, red-stitched black leather seats and the surprisingly torquey 235Nm oiler.

Ford’s S-MAX and Galaxy people-movers have gained a 149kW version of the new 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine as well as the latest PowerShift double wet-clutch transmission system.

The Fiat Doblo is refreshed for the new year with myriad options including four engines, five or seven seats, long or short-wheel base panel vans and standard and high roofs.

The Citroen C-Zero – sister car to the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Peugeot iOn – shares the 47kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack for a range of 128km.

European premieres in Brussels include the Alfa Romeo Brera Italia Independent, Audi A8, Fiat 500 1.3 MJet, Nissan 370Z Roadster and the Porsche Boxster Spyder.
