Tesla Supercharger site opens in Ballarat

Tesla keeps on expanding its Supercharger network in Australia, this week opening a new site in the key regional Victorian city of Ballarat, about 120km from Melbourne.

The six-bay charging station is billed as the first connection from Melbourne to Adelaide, and was opened by City Councillor Jim Rinaldi.

Tesla’s Superchargers can add up to 270 km of range in about 30 minutes of charging, and as such are designed for city-to-city travel, allowing users to travel for about three hours, take a quick break, and get back on the road charged up.

The Ballarat Supercharger site is close to a range of dining and retailers for Tesla owners to experience while charging, the company says. Greater Ballarat has nearly 100,000 residents.

Since announcing the technology in late 2012, Tesla has deployed 810 Supercharger Stations and 5195 Superchargers worldwide, making it the “fastest-growing fast-charging network in the world”. There are a dozen sites along Australia’s east coast.

People who purchased and took delivery of a Tesla Model S or Model X prior to April 2017 can charge for free for the life of the vehicle.

For any new vehicle delivered after April 2017, 400kWh of Supercharging credits (roughly 1600 kms) will be included annually. Beyond that, there will be a fee, as detailed here.

All Tesla cars will continue to come standard with the onboard hardware required for Supercharging.
