Mercedes-Benz to recall 1 million cars globally for engine fires, local impact unclear

Mercedes-Benz will recall around 1 million vehicles across various model lines, after numerous reports of engine fires as a result of a faulty fuse.

According to a report published by industry journal Automotive News, parent company Daimler announced the recall after 51 fires were reported - the majority being in the USA.

Several model lines are affected, including C-Class, E-Class, CLA, GLA and GLC vehicles produced from 2015 through 2017.

The German marque says the recalled models are fitted with a defective "current limiter", which can cause the starter motor to overheat if the owner requires numerous attempts to start the vehicle.

If the condition occurs, the overheating motor can melt nearby parts and potentially start a fire.

Automotive News reports 307,629 of the million vehicles affected are in the US, while the breakdown of recalled models outside of the States is yet to be detailed. The report also confirms 30 of the fire incidents were reported in the US market.

In terms of rectifying the issue, the company says an additional fuse will be fitted, while the same fix will be applied on the production line.

Owners of the affected vehicles in the US will be notified later this month.

Australia

It is currently unclear as to whether Australian-delivered Mercedes-Benz models are affected by the recall, though the company's local arm says it is looking into the issue.

Speaking with CarAdvice, a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz Australia said the company is monitoring the situation and will update with more information when it comes to hand.

"We are currently looking into the details of this recall as a highest priority to confirm if any vehicles sold in Australia are affected. Hopefully we will have some more information soon," he said.

It's worth noting the report by Automotive News specifically identifies the US, China and Germany as the three largest markets for Mercedes-Benz, all being left-hand drive - meaning it may not impact Australia.
