VW New Compact Coupe previews new Jetta design

By Tim Beissmann |

Volkswagen’s New Compact Coupe has been revealed at the Detroit Motor Show as a concept – but all the signs suggest it is anything but.

One of the most polished and production-ready vehicles in history to get the “concept” label, the New Compact Coupe represents our first look at the new Jetta, and this model will almost certainly wear CC badges (like the Passat) in the not-too-distant future.

Combining an 110kW/240Nm 1.4-litre TSI engine and a 20kW electric motor with VW’s seven-speed DSG transmission, the electric motor can either work independently of the engine to make it a full hybrid or in tandem to provide more grunt under heavy acceleration.

With an emphasis on performance and driving enjoyment, the New Compact Coupe sprints from 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds and keeps on going all the way to 227km/h.

But more important are those smaller numbers, which are very small: combined-cycle fuel consumption of 4.2 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of just 98g/km.

The design of the New Concept Coupe was overseen by head of design for the Volkswagen Group, Walter de Silva, and styled by a team led by head of Volkswagen Design, Klaus Bischoff – apparently using a stencil of the Audi A5.

Its clean lines, sharp details, intricate bi-xenon headlights and aerodynamically efficient grille represent an evolution of the styling direction already seen on the Golf and Polo models.

The theme is continued inside with four white leather bucket seats, and a practical 380 litre boot.

The official line says “the New Compact Coupe remains a concept at present with no immediate plans for production”, but I don’t think VW is fooling anyone with that line.

After the inevitable positive feedback from the Detroit masses, expect to see this car on the road very soon.

Very Audi-ish back. Overall I quite like the design. Interior looks alittle cheap though.

The colours don’t do the interior justice. The dash looks much the same as the golf 6 and the seats look like the scirroco. Will be much nicer in darker colours I reckon.

I hit my enlarge button, Azza, and I think the interior looks tremendous. I particularly like the trim garnishes. This is not a Golf Mk6 dashboard. I’ve got a high resolution brochure for one of those on my desk right now. This concept’s dash is totally different.

Very nice, so Hybrids don’t have to be hideous after all…

So VW also using petrol not diesel. But with Turbo + Supercharger. near Prius fuel consumption. Cool, whats the expected price tag?

    It’s a bit meh really.

  • Valet Dabess

front lights look niiiiice. imagine it in the review mirror, you’d be like damn, wtf is that…

The jetta finally gets some much needed edge. if they can make the production model as good looking as this then they have a winner on their hands. But one thing the whole VW empire does is very generic interiors. VW really need to change their interiors up a bit. That design is really looking old, as its in the Golf VI.

  • Baddass

This is quite wwll proportioned, but as soon as the Passat CC came out I knew there would be a Jetta equivalent. But adding a coupe to the Jetta has now made the choice of a small two-door VW even harder. Polo 3-door, Golf 3-door, Scirocco, Eos and now this.

  • spellbound

Interiors are a VAG speciality , live with one and you are spoilt , certainly better than any GM or ford interior , by miles .

    • Shak

      not the new ones.

  • David Jones

you guys are harsh. I reckon it looks great bring it on makes a Honda Crz look stupid.

  • Paul

Any bets on if VW Australia wont release this coupe into Australia? Like they did with the Scirocco?

and with Lithium Ion Batteries onboard, this car is not going to be cheap if you choose the Hybrid Option.

However with the 2.0L engine out of the GTI… it could go quite well.

  • gmac

They seem to be the only ones who are consistently bringing out great cars across the range. I can’t wait for my GTI to arrive next month.

    • Simon

      Much happy motoring for you!

  • Kris

Hopefully the next Jetta is based on this coupe. VW would be mad not to do it, it’s a good looking car and would improve the image of Jetta to no end. Apart from some quirky touches on the interior, it looks pretty close to being production ready going off the photos.

  • NotTheStig

Looks great. Hope the 4 door is a similar theme.

Interior will be nice once it is in more practical (not show car) colours…

    I’d buy one…

Before opening this article I told myself that if this Jetta looks something like the Golf 6 I’m going to soil my pants. Luckily though it doesn’t. I agree with azza85 about the audi’ish back, but what is wrong with that. The interior is great, especially the flat/linear style aircon vents. The bucket seats denotes some sportyness aswell.
Lets all hope the new Jette does look like this.

  • vw fan

Could there be hints of golf vii ?

    • http://mymaties.com VDub Fan

      I like your name.

  • http://unsure italian

I’d have it. Looks a little A5 from the rear which isn’t a bad thing

  • Simon

Very impressive consumption figures! Having said that, I’d really go for it if it was a little bigger than the current Jetta and as was previously mentioned, had a high spec 2.0 Turbo.

  • Peter

Rear for me has a very 3-Series Coupe look to it even a little Audi A5.

  • gt

VW….please, please, please bring back the BORA name
    Jetta sounds sh*it.
