BMW 1 Series sedan detailed for China, not for Australia

The new front-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series sedan has been detailed and launched this week for the Chinese market, nearly eight months after its initial reveal.

Built on the UKL platform that underpins the new X1, 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini range, the 1 Series sedan measures 4456mm long, 1803mm wide and 1446mm tall. This makes it 127mm longer, 35mm wider and 25mm taller than its hatch-backed sibling, though the 2670mm wheelbase is 20mm shorter.

Three engines are offered in the 1 Series sedan, all petrol. First is the 118i, powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo shared with Mini Cooper models, which develops 100kW of power and 220Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Acceleration is adequate, taking 9.4 seconds to sprint from 0-100km/h on its way to a top speed of 212km/h, while fuel use is rated at 5.5L/100km on the combined cycle.

Next up is the 120i, motivated by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, pumping out 141kW and 280Nm.

Mated to an eight-speed automatic, the 120i can dash from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 235km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.2L/100km for the 120i.

Finally the flagship 125i uses an uprated 2.0-litre turbo four, producing a meaty 170kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

Also fitted as standard with the eight-speed auto, the 125i sprints from 0-100km/h in just 6.8 seconds and has a limited top speed of 250km/h. Fuel use for the 125i is rated at 6.4L/100km.

Like other BMW models, the 1 Series sedan offers selectable driving modes, along with numerous styling packs for extra personalisation.

Optionally available are a range of driver assistance systems including city-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning and parking assistant.

The 1 Series sedan will also be offered with BMW's latest connectivity solutions, including BMW Connected and Open Mobility Cloud services.

BMW has also included market-specific features for China, including a special climate control air conditioning system that not only heats and cools the cabin but also has an air filtering function.

Australia

As it has been specifically designed and developed for the Chinese market - while also being solely produced there - the 1 Series sedan has been ruled out for a wider global launch.

Hence, don't expect to see a smaller BMW sedan in local showrooms anytime soon.
