Porsche Cayenne details leaked, Australian launch mid-year

Details of the new Porsche Cayenne have leaked almost two months ahead of its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Official data from a private German press event details that the new range will feature two 4.8-litre V8s including a 373kW (500hp) turbo and a 298kW (400hp) naturally aspirated unit, as well as a 3.6-litre 224kW (300hp) V6.

Improved fuel efficiency and weight reductions of up to 10 percent have slashed fuel consumption by as much as 23 percent in petrol-powered Cayennes.

Also joining the renewed line-up will be a 179kW 3.9-litre diesel (available in overseas variants of the Audi Q7), as well as an Audi-engineered hybrid powered by a supercharged 246kW 3.0-litre V6/35kW electric motor combination with lithium-ion battery technology to be shared with the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid.

Porsche claims the hybrid uses around 8.2 litres/100km on the combined European driving cycle and emits just 200g/km CO2.

Like the outgoing model the new Cayenne will be manufactured in two stages: firstly at the VW plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, and then finally assembled at Porsche’s German Leipzig factory.

The new Cayenne will be officially unveiled at Switzerland’s world-famous motor show in March with global sales to begin soon after.

Porsche Cars Australia spokesman, Paul Ellis, could not reveal specific details about the local launch but confirmed an all-new Cayenne with all-new engines would arrive in Australia around mid-year.

“The hybrid will be part of the new Cayenne range in Australia,” Mr Ellis announced.

“I’m not sure of the timing, but certainly it won’t be far away after the new model is introduced. Hopefully this year.

“There will be a diesel model in the new Cayenne line-up so we will continue to have the diesel,” he said.

Porsche sold 562 Cayennes in 2009, roughly half of the brand’s total local sales.

“Cayenne’s been a strong seller for us. It’s sort of recession-proof that car so it’s been very good from a sales point of view, we’ve been very happy with it.”

“It will be difficult this year because we’re in run-out mode with our current Cayenne so therefore we won’t have as much volume to sell. So sales for the total year 2010 will be down but that’s just because of the product changeover,” he said.

An official target for Cayenne in 2010?

“The goal is to sell as many as we can.”
