Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid revealed, on sale in Australia now

Manic 500kW limo bound for Geneva motor show

Porsche will unveil an even more potent Panamera Hybrid at the Geneva motor show next month with confirmation of the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. It is the first time a plug-in hybrid will spearhead a model line for Porsche.

Powering the Turbo S E-Hybrid is the same 4.0-litre V8 engine from the Panamera Turbo. However, the addition of an electric motor sees the flagship variant pump out 500kW (up 100kW over the standard Turbo) with a monstrous 850Nm of torque. That will help propel the four-door tourer from 0.100km/h in a claimed 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 310km/h.

All that performance won’t hurt the hip pocket either, with Porsche claiming an average fuel consumption figure of just 2.9L/100km. Additionally, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid can cover 50km purely on electric power.

Transmitting power to the Panamera’s all-wheel drive system is Porsche’s ubiquitous eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox. A smooth ride is ensured via Porsche’s air suspension package, standard on this car.

The electric motor gains its power via a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 14.1kWh. The battery can be fully charged in six hours through a standard 230V connection. Charging time can be dramatically reduced (to just 2.4 hours) by using an optional 7.2kW on-board charge coupled to a 230V connection with 32 A instead of the standard 3.6kW charger.

Porsche has focussed on reducing CO2 emissions while still maintaining its sporting credentials. The Turbo S E-Hybrid starts in fully electric mode and will cover up to 50km of local driving with zero emissions. Only when a set pressure point is passed on the accelerator – or when battery charge levels drops a below a minimum level – will the Panamera engage ‘hybrid auto’ mode, using the power of both engines.

As befitting a near half-a-million-dollar car, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid comes loaded with standard features including: Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), Power Steering Plus and 21-inch alloy wheels in the 911 Turbo Design. The basic package also contains auxiliary air-conditioning, adaptive aerodynamic elements and three-chamber air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is on sale now priced from $460,100 plus on-road-costs, and will arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2017.
