2017 Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R: track-ready terror teased in tasty-looking sketch

Set to go racing in the US and around the world later this year, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R is based on the current 477kW/868Nm Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, yet, has been designed and built by Chevrolet – in partnership with Pratt & Miller Engineering – to meet global GT4 racing regulations.

This means the rear-drive weapon gets a race-spec, dry-sumped 6.2-litre LT1 small-block V8 engine, a paddle-shifted Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission, and an Xtrac limited-slip rear differential.

Although only one official sketch of the Camaro GT4.R has been released at this stage, America’s International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has shared additional details on the car, including its two-way adjustable Ohlins coil-over dampers, adjustable traction control and ABS systems, and Brembo braking package, headlined by six-piston aluminium monobloc front calipers.

Clearly obvious, even from the sole sketch, aerodynamics too have been upgraded from the standard Camaro ZL1, and comprise an aggressive front splitter, wide lower side skirts, and healthy-sized new rear wing.

In the US, the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – a car that claims 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds – starts at around US$62,135 ($81,000), so, needless to say, as with most racing cars, you’ll need some serious coin to play with this particular toy.

Able to trace it roots back to cars such as the Camaro GS and Camaro Z/28.R, once racing, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R - which you can hear on noise here - will battle it out on track with the likes of GT4 rivals based on road-going versions of the Aston Martin Vantage, Ford Mustang, McLaren 570S, and Porsche Cayman.
