Mercedes-Benz Aesthetics A previews new compact cars

Mercedes-Benz this week rather portentously revealed rendered images of a concept called the Aesthetics A, previewing the styling of its next generation compact cars.

The conceptual sculptures show the general styling cues that will feature across an expanded range of vehicle types, all based on a reworked second iteration of its front-and all-wheel drive MFA (modular front architecture) platform.

As well as new generations of the A-Class, B-Class, GLA, CLA sedan and CLA Shooting Brake wagon, there is expected to be a new A-Class sedan to rival the Audi A3, and an additional crossover potentially called the GLB that will be more practical than the GLA.

The A-Class sedan, which Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche alluded to in Detroit earlier this month, appears to be the vehicle previewed by the Aesthetics A. The images were first published by UK outlet Autocar from a small design briefing in Europe.

It appears to move away from the current MFA cars’ heavily surfaced design language and instead adopt the smoother classical lines used on larger longitudinal Mercedes cars from the C-Class upwards, fitting into chief design officer Gorden Wagener’s holistic vision.

Only the broad and muscular shoulder line remains, with the nose in particular sporting a substantial re-think. The boldly designed bonnet and the grille — reminiscent of the updated Mercedes-AMG GT, in fact — promises big change to come.
