Suzuki Kizashi retires

Some seven years after first launching in Australia, the Suzuki Kizashi has been retired.

The news was brought to our attention by CarAdvice reader Michael, who noticed the small mid-sized sedan had disappeared from the company's local website.

A call to Suzuki Australia general manager Andrew Moore confirmed the news. "Yes, it has left us," Moore said.

There are none left in dealer stock, although Moore says there are about five ex-fleet examples available for any that simply must get into what might be Suzuki's final offering outside of the SUV and light-car segments.

Although a new-generation Grand Vitara is understood to be on the way, the company has made no secret of its intention to focus on small and light cars, an arena it aims to dominate in the years ahead.

The company has not categorically ruled out a new-generation Kizashi, but its current strategy suggests we likely won't see a new mid-sized Suzuki passenger car anytime soon.

After a early spark of promise, the Kizashi had a trying life in Australia. Just 38 were registered new in 2016, its final year of production, down from 126 in 2015. By comparison, its best year, 2011, saw 1592 examples finding homes with Australian buyers, although the number slowly declined in the years after.

Long-time readers will remember Suzuki first wowed buyers with the Kizashi 3 concept in 2008, which appeared at that year's Melbourne motor show.

Big, long and low, the Kizashi 3 concept held plenty of promise for a stylish entrant in the mid-sized sedan market, promising the sort of style usually delivered by premium players.

Of course, the final production didn't bring anywhere near the same level of swagger, but it was an interesting adventure for the brand.

Perhaps if it delivered on the promise of its concept progenitor, we'd be seeing another new Kizashi to rival the long, wide and European-looking Mazda 6 right now…

Sayonara, Kizashi.
