Ferrari 599 Hybrid concept to appear at Geneva Motor Show

When Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told press at this year's Geneva Motor Show that the prancing horse was testing a hybrid version of its 599 GTB Fiorano, most believed the model wouldn't surface for at least five years.

But a report published in Italy's Quattroroute magazine over the weekend suggests the environmentally friendly Ferrari will instead be displayed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Unlikely typical hybrids that use a combination of petrol and electric motivation, the 599's system will instead feature an F1 derived KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) mild hybrid system that employs an electric motor near the rear transaxle and a lithium-ion battery pack.

KERS allows for regenerative braking as well as an automatic start-stop system, and thanks to its F1 roots, Ferrari’s road-going KERS system will also give drivers an electric boost at the touch of a button.

Fuel economy improvements are expected to be in the vicinity of 30 per cent with the combined average figure jumping from 27.03 to 17.04L/100km.

Although production plans for the 599 Hybrid have yet to be officially confirmed, if rumours are correct, we expect to see a production model by 2015.
