2017 Opel Crossland X revealed as Meriva replacement

The all-new 2017 Opel Crossland X has been revealed overnight in UK-market Vauxhall guise, and will sit below the Mokka X in the company's line-up.

Serving as the successor to the Meriva people mover, the Crossland X has been given a comprehensive makeover, and will take on the likes of the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 when it hits the European showrooms later this year.

Measuring 4212mm long, 1765mm wide and 1590mm tall, the Crossland X is one of the smaller SUVs on sale, though has a healthy luggage capacity of 410L, well ahead of the Mazda CX-3 (264L) and just shy of the Honda HR-V (437L).

However, a sliding rear bench allows the boot to expand to a class-leading 520L with the rear seats in place, growing to 1255L with the second row folded flat.

In terms of its design the new crossover bears a resemblance to its Meriva predecessor, though adapts the tall and practical body to a more rugged-looking SUV aesthetic with contrasting plastic bumpers, underbody protection and a raised ride height, while the 'floating roof' can be optioned in a contrasting paint finish.

The Crossland X will be available with the company's OnStar technology, which allows for a WiFi hotspot, vehicle location tracking, remote vehicle start and run remote diagnostics.

A pair of infotainment systems will be offered, however, screen sizes are yet to be detailed - likely a 7.0-inch screen for entry-level models and an 8.0-inch unit for top-spec variants - though Vauxhall has confirmed both will be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other key features that are offered depending on grade include wireless phone charging, adaptive LED headlights with integrated LED daytime-running lights, head-up display, 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, speed sign recognition, cruise control, driver fatigue monitor, heated steering wheel and windscreen, along with keyless entry and start.

In terms of powertrains, no details have been confirmed yet, though the close family ties with the next-generation Citroen C3 Picasso and Peugeot 2008 mean the Crossland X will likely offer a range of small-capacity turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 1.2 to 2.0-litres.

Australia

Holden has confirmed the Crossland X is not a starter for Australia, as the larger Mokka X's cousin, the Holden Trax, currently competes in the compact SUV segment in Australia.

Don't be surprised, however, if the anticipated Grandland X makes its way here.
