Saab offered last minute life line by Spyker

By Matt Brogan |

Following the announcement on the weekend that the intended sales terms of Saab Automobile AB between Spyker and General Motors (GM) could not be finalised, the Spyker leadership has submitted a renewed offer in the hopes of securing a future for Saab, its employees and the brand – despite the announcement that the winding down of Saab would begin.

Spyker CEO Victor R. Muller said today that an 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process and that the renewed offer would remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction.

“We have made every effort to resolve the issues that were preventing the conclusion of this matter and we have asked GM and all other involved parties to seriously consider this offer,” said Mr Muller.

“We are very confident that our renewed offer will remove the impasse that was standing in the way of an agreement on Friday, and this would still allow us to conclude the deal prior to the expiry of the deadline originally set by GM of December 31st.

“Despite our collective eleventh hour set-back, we are returning to the table with a renewed offer, that addresses every known issue brought to light during the initial negotiations and that has the full backing of the Saab Management.

“The new offer eliminates the need for an EIB loan approval prior to year end, for example, which will allow the deal to be concluded within GM’s deadline.

“Our efforts are based on our passion for saving an iconic brand that we would be honoured to shepherd, and the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of loyal Saab employees, suppliers and dealers around the world. Some 1,500,000 Saabs are on the road today and their proud owners would no doubt welcome the survival of this phenomenal brand.”

In Spyker’s view, the ownership of Saab by Spyker Cars would add a lot of value to both parties. For Spyker, Saab would bring a strong, global distribution network consisting of no less than 1100 dealers, state-of-the-art production facilities, a truly dedicated work force and solid engineering, sourcing and research & development capabilities.

Likewise, Saab would receive the financial backing required to compete as a competitive global brand, along with an entrepreneurial leadership team sensitive to the uniqueness, heritage and individuality of the Saab brand. Throughout these negotiations, both Spyker and Saab leadership have proven that they share a mutual vision for just such a partnership.

“Our company motto is nulla tenaci invia est via – for the tenacious no road is impassable,” said Muller, “And we intend to remain true to that throughout these negotiations as we bid to secure Saab’s future and revive the company.”

The renewed Spyker offer is valid until 5pm (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday December 21, 2009.

    My fingers are crossed!

  • o

please please please. spyker is the owner saab needs

  • Baddass

I want to believe it can happen, but what’s to say they won’t pull out again?

  • Deco

Can nothing involving GM be simple =/.

  • Old Dog

This is worse than some cheesy romantic comedy. But I hope for the sake of the
e families of those at Saab, that spyker wins the hearts of those nobs at
    gm.

What GM now are doing can only be explained by their fat and disgusting corporate greed. One of their subsidiaries is on the verge of liquidation and there is a sound Dutch company that is willing to save it.

And GM still would rather have it wound up because they think they are not getting enough money for it. So they are happy for all those jobs to be lost and families to be in hardtimes in an already hard economic climate like now only because they want more money!!

GM management should be blamed for its extreme negligence. Once the world’s largest car manufacturer is selling away everything they can just to stay afloat and any plans to revive their performance up to the level of VAG or Toyota is no where in near future. They are just bloody busy keeping afloat no resources for long-term strategic operation.

    • poohbear

Oh please spare us the semantics…like you’d know what machinations were going on behind the scenes from GM or the other party
      get over yourself

  • Brett

Lets hope they come to some agreement. SAAB would be much better off without them, in fact perhaps the car world would be better off without GM. They have raped SAAB and then ditched them, with total disregard for its workers. GM used to make some great cards, but have not moved on.

That’s how America’s greedy capitalism works… Managements in that country don’t give a damn to workers’ lives as long as they get their hot and tasty bonuses.

American banks have received billions of $$$$ in bailout from the federal government and where did the money go? to restoring their liquidity and operation back to normal?

      No.

It all went to Executive Bonus Parties!! So the same hold for GM…

Oh dear. I thought I would finally not have my eye’s assaulted by ugly saabs any more. looks like they may keep making these eye-sore cars again.

if only volvo would go down the tube as well.

    • The Real Car Fanatic

Well you look in the mirror everyday, looking at a Saab or Volvo would be a breathe of fresh air for you.

    • jinsei

I don’t get which part of Saab is ugly to you. Opinions on saab’s design can differ but I wonder if anyone would say it’s ‘ugly’. Even a car like the Chrysler 300C (whose nauseatingly fat and exaggerating exterior design offends me) are allowed to be mass-produced so why not Saab?

They are sleek and good looking to me. At least, they are definitely not so offensive as to ‘assault your eyes’. They have such an inoffensive look so why it sores your eyes is beyond me.

        he probably drives a Toyota

  • spellbound

Unfortunately this is dejavu , we all remember the debacle with leyland in the 70S and the govt buy in which ended up with blood on the floor and total liquidation of many british names , triumph , rover etc .

This is the sad case here with saab , and will probably end with the demise of a whole raft of ugly GM products here to , the end is nigh

  • mh2408

Shame on you GM…… I hope this works

  • Robin Graves

Typical GM, trying to flog something old and tired for top dollar. Unfortunately for SAAB the only rednecks willing to buy GM products buy ‘local’ cars, swear black and blue they are the best things since sliced bread and keep the local economy going. Anyone with half a brain wont pay top dollar for a piece of fecal matter with a GM badge on it. I hope for the worker’s at SAAB that they can finally break free from the Cletus Car Company

  • Tom R

Pray everyone Pray!!! Saab is one of the most brilliant inovative companies in the world!!! They just seem to have issues making money…

And GM, you can get screwed. I was rooting for you before.
    *glares*
Now you can join the Chrysler basket. WHY OH WHY DID FIAT SAVE THEM.
Well, I guess its best… there was a lot of families and jobs in Chrysler…

GM are the worst company on the planet. I never have liked them and never will. The only reason why I don’t hope total gloom and doom for GM is because I wouln’t want to see thousands of people out of work and thus people struggle in life. Otherwise I have no symphony for GM. I hope Spyker can save Saab as I am a Saab owner and do not want to see this icon lost because of scum like GM.
