Famously outspoken Tesla boss Elon Musk has again taken to his favourite platform, Twitter, to hint at a powerful new upgrade.

Responding to a query from Electrek.com writer Fred Lambert about solar installations at existing Supercharger stations, Musk said that while some are solar-powered already, it would be ‘Supercharger V3′ that would see the greatest benefit.

Lambert followed up with a guess at the sorts of power outputs that Tesla owners would benefit from, throwing the figure 350kW – a not insignificant leap beyond the recent upgrade to 150kW – into the air.

Musk’s reply: “A mere 350kW … what are you referring to, a children’s toy?”

Only weeks ago, a conglomerate of massive automotive businesses – including BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen Group – revealed plans to team up on a network of 400-plus “ultra-fast” charging stations across Europe, offering outputs up to 350kW.

It remains to be seen just how far beyond that mark Tesla’s new Supercharger will go, although there are plans in Europe already for 600kW “flash-charging” stations dedicated to electric buses, with Switzerland-based ABB promising a five-minute recharge.

Musk says the “pieces are now in place” on the Supercharger ‘V3’ rollout, although a specific timeline has yet to be revealed.
