Ferrari J50:: Special spider celebrates half century in Japan

The very special new Ferrari J50 has been revealed, celebrating the company's 50th anniversary in Japan.

Just 10 examples of the J50 will be built, and each will be customised specifically for their future owners. No pricing has been announced, but it's likely that the J50's entire production run has been pre-sold to existing Ferrari enthusiasts.

Based on the 488 Spider, and the J50 is motivated by a 3.9 twin-turbo V8, which has had its power has been increased from 493kW to 507kW.

The J50 features a completely unique body designed and built in-house by the company's Special Projects department, and which Ferrari says uses "a radically futuristic design language".

Up front, the J50 features a thin strip of LED headlights and a shark-like nose. The centre section of the bonnet has been lowered to emphasise the bulging wheel arches, while the radiators have also been brought closer together.

In a nod to the company's history, the J50 incorporates black dividing lines along the front and sides, similar to the ones used on the iconic GTO, F40 and F50.

Unlike the 488 Spider, onlookers can peer at the twin-turbo V8 engine through a moulded piece of transparent polycarbonate that flows visually into the J50's roll hoops.

At the back, the J50 features a quad tail-light arrangement that's said to make the car seem wider.

The interior has been pretty much brought straight over from the 488 Spider, although it does have unique trim for the sports seats. While the donor vehicle has a folding hardtop, the J50 uses a two-piece carbon-fibre targa top instead.
