2018 Lexus LS teased ahead of Detroit unveiling

The fifth-generation Lexus LS has been teased ahead of its official debut at next year's Detroit motor show in January.

From the teaser image above we can see that Lexus' new flagship sedan will stick with the brand's signature spindle grille design, tick-shaped LED driving lights, and thin headlight arrangement.

What we can see of the front end and the alloy wheels seems to be a slightly toned version version of the design used for the 2015 Lexus LF-FC concept car.

Like the concept, the new LS is said to have a "bold new look with a coupe-like silhouette without compromising roominess" and "visionary technology".

While the company acknowledges that the LS rides on the same GA-L premium rear-wheel drive platform, which made its debut under the LC coupe, it hasn't revealed much else about the new large sedan.

Given the shared platform, it's likely that the new LS will be equipped with the LC500's 350kW 5.0-litre V8 and 10-speed auto.

Also likely in the new sedan is the LC500h's 264kW Multi-Stage hybrid drivetrain, which features a 220kW 3.5-litre Atkinson-cycle V6, an electric motor, and a four-speed automatic for the rear wheels.

The introduction of the next-generation LS will come 28 years after the original Lexus LS400 made its debut at the 1989 Detroit motor show. With its aggressive pricing, and intense focus on build quality and customer service, the original LS has been widely credited with transforming the mainstream luxury car market.
