I brought my first Hyundai in 03 (98 Coupe with 63k) Cheap !! That same car now with 180k+ has never missed a beat, handles sweetly, and has seen 230+kph. If the V8 sedan lands in OZ for under $50k will be very hard to beat. I want one!!

Being the cheap ass that I am, I too hired a Hyundai Getz for 2 weeks at the Gold Coast recently. I have to admit that we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality, ease and performance of the car. The car had 14000k's on the clock when we picked it up and 17500k's when we returned it. We visited family in Roma whilst we were there, we drove there and back in 2 days. The car was fantastic it didn't miss a beat, it was comfortable, economical and fun to drive, a real surprise package. We easily sat on 130-140k/h in patches during that trip. There was some road noise evident but nothing of any concern, nor were there any rattles, rough fitting plastic, or any other problems noticed with the car for the duration of the 2 weeks. On the whole we enjoyed driving the car and considered it to be a fun, capable, zippy little car, we're considering buying one as a 2nd car. For what the car is, it was anything but ordianary.

GPrime, I agree things are improving heaps. You state that those days are long gone with the Excel yes... Still evident in a 2007 Getz!

It's funny how you guys generalize Hyundai by using their cheapest cars for comparison. Here in the U.S. people see Hyundai for what it really is...a great reliable car with a great value. Sure some negative perception exists. But remember Hyundai first started out by outsourcing just about everything from other manufacturers (namely Chrysler) which got them in a heap of quality issues with cars like the Excel. Those days are long gone. Too bad public perception isn't because they're doing a hell of a job right now and they're only getting better. Have a ride in Sonata, Azera, Santa Fe and Veracruz (if available in AU) and see what I mean.

Lets hope Hyundai lifts the bar in quality in the car and motor. I just drove a Getz up at Cairns for 1week and it was nippy and nimble... but it was a heap of crap, back rattled all the time behind seats, did NOT feel well gripped to the road as other cars, the fitting of plastics was still rough, motor rough, noise control useless and the amazing one was the steering wheel manufacture - on one side the embossed work finished certain location and on the other side it was no in same spot but some 5mms or more away from where it should of been. Good car for the McDonalds drive through set - but still ORDINARY

Getting ready to cop some flack too because I have to agree with David. I currently own an Aussie built Ford and I've owned Holdens in the past, while the cars have always been solid & reliable the internal trim alone makes $60K for an Aussie sedan a tough ask.
From that point of view I wonder if Hyundai could end up being a dark horse like the "cheap" Japanese brands of old, while $60K wont buy a fantastically finished mid/full size sedan built locally try comparing it to Subarus or Hondas in the same price bracket, sure the engine is smaller but the cars certainly are better finished in fact they tend to be luxurious by comparison.
And I think that with the exception of buying with the heart (blue or red bloods alike) most people will probably opt for the more luxurious car for the same money, I could be wrong but I’ve always felt that most people buy a car for A to B and the comfort/functionality it offers (of course looks play a part too!).
Remember we're enthusiasts faster cars peak our interest (most of us anyway) and names like Hyundai make us turn away, but if Hyundai can produce a car that's good looking, has some power and is well finished then they'll win sales and most likely change their brand image in the process.

Concept cars cannot be taken seriously, they are just that, concepts. But some do make it to production.I have a feeling this is one. There is nothing way out there about it's appearance.
An import such as this into Australia in a price bracket of 40-60K depending on engine & trim & other equipment should have the home growns concerned.
I would not be surprised if the Hyundai would have choices of V6 LPG/petrol or diesel as well as the mentioned V8.Holden & Ford need to take a look at the real possibilty of this car getting to production & imported here in large numbers.
To fall back on some notion that Australians are not ready to pay 60k for a Hyundai is dangerous. It is a similar attitude to Japanese cars decades ago.
Personally 60k is a lot for a Holden or a Ford.
I await the flack.

there is definetly a market in australia for large V8 sedans, holden has never sold more V8's in its history then it is right now

the problem is more that australian's are not yet ready to pay 60k for a hyundai

From those pics, it looks like a camry and a maxima merged together. Is there a big market for big V8 sedans right now? Ford has discontinued it's V8 line-up am I right (except for FPV)?
