BMW X6 M arrives, X5 M coming in January

As revealed by CarAdvice in September, BMW Australia has enhanced its high-performance range with the arrival of the X6 M.

To be joined by the X5 M in January 2010, the head of BMW Group Australia, Stavros Yallouridis, said the new power couple would set new standards in the high-powered SUV market.

“We are particularly pleased to welcome a new chapter of BMW M to the Australian market given we have such a loyal and strong following of the M product range.

“Now with the arrival of the X6 M and X5 M, we’re able to offer an M version which will tempt performance-oriented buyers considering an ML 63 AMG or Cayenne Turbo with benefits such as faster acceleration, less weight and better fuel consumption,” he said.

The X6 M is powered by a 408kW 4.4-litre V8 with 680Nm of torque available from 1500-5650rpm.

The TwinPower turbo engine is the world’s first power unit with a common exhaust emission manifold joining both rows of cylinders as well as Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 4.7 seconds making it 0.7secs quicker than the xDrive50i, while the top speed is limited to 250km/h.

BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies like Brake Energy Regeneration keep combined fuel consumption to 14.3 litres/100km, while CO2 emissions are a hefty 335g/km.

The X6 M’s six-speed Sports Automatic transmission can be operated with aluminium shift paddles on the steering wheel or the electronic gear selector, and gearshift times are minimised by the addition of a torque reduction system which briefly cancels out fuel injection and ignition.

It also features M Dynamic Mode which raises the control thresholds for intervention by the brakes and the reduction of the engine power, and provides typical steering behaviour by shifting the drive power to the rear.

BMW says this allows for maximum speeds in bends and unrestricted safety when driving to the extreme.

Both the X6 M and X5 M are fitted with electronically adjustable dampers, self-levelling air suspension on the rear axle, stiffer shock absorbers and modified swaybars, and are 10mm lower than their non-M series siblings due to a specific M suspension setup.

Other standard equipment on the X6 M includes a glass roof, bi-xenon adaptive dual headlights, adaptive brake lighting, head-up display and heated seats.

The new BMW X6 M is priced from $179,900 and the X5 M priced from $172,900.

(Prices are the manufacturer’s recommended list price including GST and Luxury Car Tax but not including dealer charges, stamp duty, statutory charges and on-road charges.)
