the united states is the perfect place for diesel vehicles for several reasons. we have speed limits of 55mph to 75mph and hence don't really need massive horsepower which is what is required to go 140mph. our driving is 0-60mph which is torque and torque alone which diesels make in abundance. the reason u.s. citizens have never liked small underpowered cars is that merging onto highways in the u.s. with 60 ton trucks whizzing past you at 80mph you better be able to get from 0-60mph in less than a year. yes diesel is fossil fuel, but biodiesel is not, and i have read biodiesel will run most diesel vehicles fine except in very cold climates. but nonetheless, 1 gallon of diesel fuel will take a mercedes e series car 37miles per gallon where gas will take that same car 24miles per gallon. we just cut our fuel usage by more than 30% without sacrificing anything. i need a large vehicle as i carry big items in my job as a salesman, and i need 4 wheel drive as i cover area which have heavy snows and hilly areas. i can't wait until more european and japanese manufacturers bring these vehicles to the u.s. so i can get out of my present 17mpg suv and get into a 30-40mpg vehicle.
