Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo confirmed for Australia

Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia has confirmed its luxury camper van, the Marco Polo Activity, will available in Australia from next year with a starting price of $69,990 (plus on-road costs).

The Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity is based on the German brand's people mover, the Valente, and can seat up to seven people with a host of features designed to make that road trip even more comfortable.

Measuring a generous 5140mm in length, 1930mm wide and 1980mm tall, the Marco Polo Activity is powered by a 2.1-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel pumping out 120kW of power and 380Nm of torque. It will be mated to the company's seven-speed automatic transmission.

Standard features include satellite navigation, rear-view camera, driver and front passenger airbags, thorax-pelvis and curtain airbags, crosswind assist, attention assist, adaptive electronic stability program, adaptive brake lights, automatic headlights and wipers along with active parking assist with front and rear sensors.

Additionally, emphasising its camper van status, the Marco Polo comes with two batteries that allows Australia's happy campers to utilise the second battery without draining the starter battery, handy when using the standard-fit auxiliary heater. The heater can be programmed to preheat the vehicle – and maintain a comfortable temperature – even when stationary.

But the Marco Polo's party trick is in the back – and on top. Boasting a manual pop-up roof that raises the height of the Marco Polo to 2350mm while also revealing an additional bed that can take up to 200kg. The manually-operated pop-up roof is made of water-resistant fabric – handy for those rainy nights on the road – and features zippered window flaps that can be opened to improve ventilation.

Inside, the front seats can be rotated to face the rear compartment when the Marco Polo is stationary, while the three-seat rear bench can be removed to increase load capacity or, more importantly in this type of vehicle, folded down to form a bed measuring approximately 1930mm by 1350mm.

For those on the adventure trail desiring a little more luxury and refinement, options will include a manual side awning, Black Lugano leather interior, seven-seat configuration and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia says the Marco Polo Activity will be available in a choice of 12 colours and will go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of 2017.
