FPV Limited Edition ‘Cobra GT Falcon’

August 28, 2007 by Matt Brogan

Ford forums are rife with rumour this week that FPV are to release a limited edition ‘Cobra GT Falcon’ to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Allan Moffat and Colin Bond’s historic 1977 form-finish at Bathurst.

To be unofficially unveiled at this year’s Bathurst, the 302kW Boss V8 powered sedan will see it’s official release at Sydney’s International Motor Show. There is also speculation that a ute variant will follow, perhaps based on the Super Pursuit.

Like the GT 40th Anniversary model, they are only to be available in one colour, obviously white with blue stripes, and will be limited to a run of 250 units. The bonnet decal will read ‘Boss 302′ but all other specs are to be the same as the 40th Anniversary model. Pricing is said to be $71,500.

Some dealers are said to be taking orders but Ford remains tight lipped. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

    ***PRIMO***!

What ever happened to the Supercharged V8 that Tickford [yes, all the way back then] engineered and approved for Falcon installation?

    Cheers

    F-0

  2. Blue Blood says:

The original Cobra was a hardtop (2 door).

And I agree – where is the supercharger!!!

  3. Matthew says:

Wow! Another tarted up Ford/Holden with go faster stripes. What a revelation! No doubt queues will form quickly of people with false self esteem, big egos and lots of money to snap up these.

Hopefully it will have fog lights so the dim witted drivers can blind oncoming traffic with gay abandon; just becuase they think it looks “cool” (or are too stupid to figure out how to turn the lights off).

Will be exciting to see these things drag off HSV’s to see who can get to service station faster to fill up with petrol . . . again . . . .

  4. Bavarian Missile says:

You seem like an infernal student so work this out !

Wow a otro dueño marrón de Prius que se siente en el segundo carril que hace 80 en una zona 100

  5. Matt says:

Hahaha at Prius ownership ;) good one BM

  6. Matthew says:

No, I don’t own a Prius and I do not hog the right lane. Far from it. I am as passionate about driving as you probably are. But I am immensely tired of all the tools who drive V8’s who think they own the road and they are big heroes.

PS: You would never guess what I drive but I can assure you it gets from A to B as quickly and with more go-kart like fun than any V8 dinosaur could, particularly as they have to stop for fuel twice as often as I would.

  7. Adam says:

So i take it you class all V8 owners in the same category, that would be quite a list…
A pity then that these vehicles still have a viable market.
Tell us what do you drive?

  8. Matthew says:

I am simply commenting on my first hand observations and experience of V8’s and V8 drivers over the past 25 years. And every day on the road.

Each to their own, of course.

  9. Adam says:

Yes it does come down to opinion, i’ve seen plenty of ‘hoons’ in turbocharged 4cyl vehicles too, does that make those drivers ‘heroes’ and a feeling of owning the road too?

    So what do you drive?

  10. Matthew says:

Do some shopping and test driving at different Dealers and you will find many vehicles which satisfy the parameters I mention.

  11. 280zx says:

So come on big mouth what do you drive? Ill drive my Maloo and you drive what your driving and we will see who gets to the petrol station first fills up and is back on the road again in the quickest time??

  12. Adam says:

    Matthew,

    yeah ok…
You opened you trap and make an assumption, and claimed you drive a vehicle that satisfies all these parameters…
So cut the shy act and tell us?

By the way i work in the auto industry…

I’m sure i don’t need to tell you, an anthusiast that many cars shouldn’t exist, as a smaller range of vehicles would certainly suit the needs of 95% of average joe motorists…

  13. Matthew says:

I followed a Maloo on a wonderful country road just the other week. Much faster than me in a straight line but throw in some corners and I caught up very quickly. I think this annoyed the poor drivers delicate ego quite a lot.

It is even happening on this forum :-)

PS: Even if you take only 5 minutes to refill your fuel tank, at 110km/h I be ahead of you over 9km by the time you have taken off again. You need to fill twice to my once.

  14. 280zx says:

Haaaaaaa funny prick , i think i know what you drive as you mentioned this site has a lot of ego’s on board so with out a doubt you drive a Kia Rio ?LOL
I can understand now why you dont have an ego …

  15. Adam says:

So…you yourself race these ‘hoons’ that you despise?
hmmm so what do you drive?

your not hurting my ego, i don’t own a V8 bud…just like to question some peoples strange outbursts is all.

  16. DeathByPizza says:

    Matthew,
Firstly I don’t drive a V8 (Turbo I6 for those who care), but I still find your comments useless and full of frankly full of crap. Did you just learn that faster cars attract Wankers an Enthusiasts alike? Did you just learn work this out now after 25 years and felt so shocked that you had to rant about it now?

Grow Up! Any car can be driven by a wanker, that’s life, hate to break it to you but you live in a world filled with wankers (in fact I’m typing to one right now!).

Rather than making judgements and casting dispersions on everyone who drives a V8 how about structuring some kind of argument that makes sense and as 280zx & Adam rightly stated, put your money where your mouth is.

    - DBP

  17. Bavarian Missile says:

So your observations over these years would include a wide range of v8 models Mercs,BMWs,Audis,Koenigsegg CCX ect ect……….

Surely there are as many ricers being idiots as V8 drivers being tools ?

But back on the subject of the Cobra, you will be lucky to see this on the road as collectors will snap them up and store them. Already the 40th anniversary model that came out recently has increased in value. With a R/R of $ 65.000 + on road when they were released your now looking at $86.000 for one.

  18. Matt says:

Not to mention the amazing prices classic V8 Aussie muscle cars are getting these days…

  19. Matthew says:

The truth is painful, isn’t it. I have a good friend with a Monaro which he enjoys, but last time I looked the trip computer said it was using 28 litres to travel 100km. That four times the fuel my car needs to travel that same distance . . . and more fuel $top$.

PS: Adam works in the auto industry, he can name many vehicles which may be mine. But it is not Korean.

  20. Adam says:

Why should i? when your playing this silent game!?

You stirred things up, it’s only fair you justify your ‘thoughtful’ comments…

  21. DeathByPizza says:

    28 litres per 100ks?
Is he cruising freeways in 2nd gear? I don’t know anyone with a V8 who gets anything like that economy.
With numbers like that and claims you don’t care to substantiate sounds like you’re just spouting sh!t to get a reaction.

  22. Bavarian Missile says:

I thought we were here to discuss the Cobra not guess what type of car you drive Matthew.

  23. Matt says:

Wonders if new Cobra will have the snake decal on front quarters…

  24. Bavarian Missile says:

Bondy if your out there could you confirm the Ford Memo to dealers that went out this week with mention of the Phase 5 ??

I thought it wasn’t being made till 2010 so wonder why they would release info to dealers now?

  25. Bavarian Missile says:

I wonder if it will have a white interior ?The XCs had White seats with blue inserts from memory, they also came out in 302 & 351 V8s !

  26. 280zx says:

I bet Matt drives a Cobra? Haaaaa

  27. Matt says:

Hahaha, no a GTS actually (among other things), but I have a soft spot for Aussie muscle, Ford, Holden or Chrysler.

  28. Glen says:

So Matthew im guessing you drive a VTEC powered Honda, cos you act like these idiots who think they cool cos they have to rev their engines to get performance.

Anyways tell what it is or are you too scared that a bunch of “hoons” are gonna make fun of you for driving a rice burner. Who gives a toss whether you get twice the economy of a V8, people who buy V8’s are willing to pay the extra $$$ for the priviledge.

Anyways Matthew’s got his attention now we’ll just ignore him.

Ok the Cobra, I’m excited about this, at least the last FPV BA Falcon gets a much needed power boost and hopefully it comes with the R-Spec Suspension setup.

I must admit the BA shape is really starting to date but the FPV’s still look and go great.

  29. Bavarian Missile says:

    arrrr,black not white .

Memory must be fading , would like to see it carried through in the next model though.

  30. Bavarian Missile says:

Yep Glen the R spec suspension will be carried through into the Cobra and continue into the Orion.

What I cant fathom is why 302KWs when the next GT will have 320 ? Are they allocating the 302 as it suits the Cobra livery but giving it 320kws or is it 302kws? Doesn’t make financial sense to make only 250 cars with 302kw engines?

  31. DeathByPizza says:

Guess it’s a marketing thing. 302 as a ‘tuning improvement’ for the last of the BA/BF generation, 320 then becomes the ‘new’ number to sell the Orion with.

  32. Bavarian Missile says:

Back on the subject of the phase 5 that Mr Barret wants to release ,lets hope it has the title of “WORLDS FASTEST FOUR DOOR ” like the phase 3 was in 1971 ,now that would be an accomplishment by Ford here .

  33. smokin'R32 says:

Im all for aussie muscle cars but these limited editions do nothing for me, maybe its the stripes. And yeah id be inclined to think this mathew guy drives a Honda, cant be too great a car if he wont name it though.

  34. Andrew. M says:

    matthew,
if you hate v8’s what possesed you to take interest in v8 article? i know you drive a mini because i bet you just read the hsv road test and reiterated the part where the reviewer said a mini tagged him up the hill when it came to the windy parts. ah copyright infringement!!!!!!!!

    on the cobra….
awesome!! stripes need to go over the roof for sure and yeah the white interior as BM suggested would be an item to make sure it was a TRUE collectors item and didnt fall into the helm of depreciation.
a bit more power isnt enough to make a car iconic anymore. it needs some well thought of, never to be repeated stuff and the interior i think definatly needs something special.

  35. Azza says:

I’m actually really disappointed… Why 302kw!? And why release it now? Don’t get me wrong, I bet it’s a great car to drive. But I was expecting to see a great deal more difference from the normal FPV GT…

I’m gonna guess that Matthew drives a Toyota Yaris… M8, your just the same as all those other good for nothings that don’t know what they’re talking about, don’t know how to drive and try to race people on the open road. Regardless of if there are some corners, a HSV Maloo will still come out above any tiny little 4cyl. The same goes with most V8’s and Turbo 6’s… Well the ones that have power steering.

  36. Andrew. M says:

please note people this is not a picture of the said cobra!!!!
just a gt in the colours of one

  37. Matthew says:

Guys, I enjoy a lot of your posts and opinions on this site and did not intend to create such an attack. Let’s see if we can have a discussion without resorting to school yard attacks?

You are good at jumping to conclusions, ie: that I was breaking the speed limit while following the Maloo. And that I drive a Japanese car.

The exact car I drive is not the point (although it does have sodium filled exhaust valves. V8 Supercars have these, too, I understand?).

I remember when the Ford Cobra coupes won Bathurst 1-2. It was a truly great day and as a Ford fan it was tremendous. Let’s hope they can repeat it again one day.

It seems you guys and gals don’t like it, but it is a fact that on the right road (at the speed limit) a nippy light (FWD even) car can match and (with the right driver) beat a heavy V8. I have enjoyed this experience on more than one occasion, in NSW and Tas. If you don’t like it, there’s no need to act like a baby.

Let’s just enjoy our shared passion for all cars.

  38. Henry says:

To much like every other FPV..
And some more power would make it worth it maybe DJ’s 320kw at least..
But when HSV do a special car the power might not jump but the set-up changes and the car is much better to drive like that HRT thing they did with the tricked out Suspension and tyres.

  39. Bavarian Missile says:

Yep very true Andrew ,can anyone have a go at trying to photo shop it into a Cobra ? It will look like the 40th anniversary with the stripes over the bonnet but obviously in white with blue stripes and the BOSS 302 decal on the bonnet bulge ! Matts suggestion of the Cobra on the front guard would look great too.

R32 I think they like the rest of the GT range appeal to the baby boomers especially as we were to young to either have one when they came out or cant afford the real thing in the 70s model of GTs.

  40. Andrew. M says:

    henry,
do you know how to read? this is not a picture of the cobra. nor is any of the specs released, so how can you comment on what it does or doesnot have? and if you read the posts or even put 2 and 2 together the cobra will prob have the R spec suspension

  41. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey Andrew the post that was started on the Forums by a Ford Dealer taking orders for the Cobra has been removed . I think hes in strife with Ford for announcing it too early and has been told to remove it. Interesting ha !

  42. Andrew. M says:

missile, i heard about the possibility of the cobra quite a while ago. i would have thought that by now speculation would have been through the roof. i wonder why ford want to keep it a secret more so than the new falcon.
anyway whats the go with the new falcon? i mean have you heard any sort of release date yet? spy stuff has been out a while now so either this is going to be one well tested falcon, or it is ready for release very soon. i hope it comes out this year and for fords sake i think it needs to.

  43. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey Andrew have you seen Craigs photo shopped Orion V8 SuperCar ?http://www.fordforums.com.au/attachment.php?attachmentid=32847

  44. Bavarian Missile says:

Ok this has clearly been an interesting post, well done the author who has poked the stick in the Ford Hornet Nest. Any chance of putting it on the most popular posts so we can find it easier? I mean some of the current “Most Popular Posts” have been there since 2006 and the Audi has only 4 compared to 44 in a day on the Cobra one. All I am saying if we want to find out more on the up coming Cobra how about putting it somewhere we and other newbees that arrive and have something to comment on the revealment of the Cobra. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At lest until Bathurst .

  45. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey Matt someone has asked on the Ford Forums “what happened to the Cobra Post?” Reply …..”GAG”

As the next guy said “Bit Late “

  46. Matt says:

Yeah… interesting the way it goes sometimes. We’ll see what we can do about “refreshing” our fave posts section later today, appreciate everyone’s input!

  47. 40th GT says:

Interesting comments all round!! Just a bit of info on the 78 Cobra. Someone commented about a Cobra winning in 77. It was in fact not a Cobra. The Cobra came out in 1978, the 77 racing XC was a GS Rally Pack albeit not a lot different. Also the orginal Cobra has black seats with blue stripes through them, not white seats. It would be great to see a similar theme in this new version. One thing that does confuse me aboput releasing a Cobra this year. It is 30 years from the 1977 1-2 finish, however those cars were not Cobras. The Cobras didnt race until 1978, and they didnt win. Wouldnt a 30 year LE Cobra be better next year??

  48. Bavarian Missile says:

Hey 40th GT, True the XC Cobra didn’t come out till 78 but it was released to celebrate the win of Moffat & Bond in 77 in XCs so I think thats why its getting released this year to celebrate the 30th aniversary of the 1&2 win.

  49. Cob066 says:

In Fact the Cobra was only a marketing tool to get rid of the last 400 coupe bodyshells that ford had lying around. In that respect even though its not going to be a coupe it is in the true fashion of creating a special edition out of the end of a series, in the case the BF.
As a owner of an XC cobra I cant wait for the next installmet, I have already put down a deposit, I dont expect it to be an exact replica just as long as they keep the theme intact i will be quite happy. Also it will be the 1st ever Falcon with a factory 300kw.

    Bring on October I say.
