Workhorse W-15 PHEV ute detailed with 128km all-electric range

Workhorse Group, a US-based vehicle electrification company, has released the first details of its upcoming W-15 range-extended hybrid ute, which claims an all-electric range of up to 80 miles (128km).

Looking something along the lines of a futuristic Ford F-150, the Workhorse W-15 is Touted as the first plug-in hybrid pickup from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), featuring a Panasonic battery pack (of an unknown capacity) paired to an 'on-board generator' which is almost certainly a small petrol engine.

Claimed driving range on battery power alone is 80 miles (128km), extending to 310 miles (499km) with the on-board generator. An electric motor on each axle allows for four-wheel drive.

While outputs are yet to be detailed, the W-15 has a claimed gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 7200 pounds (3266kg) and a cargo capacity of 2200 pounds (998kg).

Thanks to the absence of a conventionally-size engine up front, the W-15 features a 'frunk' front luggage area along with a larger front crumple zone for improved safety.

Inside, there is seating for five, along with low- and high-voltage outlets that are fed directly from the battery pack.

The W-15 is also set to be one of the safest utes ever built, featuring advanced driver assist technologies like autonomous emergency braking (AEB), the 30-inch (0.76m) front crumple zone and lane-centering technology.

Workhorse is yet to disclose when the W-15 will be made available to consumers, though the company says it has received "non-binding letters of interest" from Duke Energy and the City of Orlando's municipal fleet in the US.
