A diligent CarAdvice reader has spotted a Hyundai Avante LPI Hybrid testing in the Sydney suburb of North Ryde yesterday.

The LHD Avante (formerly Lantra) seen in these pics shows an LPI badge on the right hand side of the boot signaling testing of Hyundai’s long awaited LPG / electric hybrid vehicle is now under way here in Australia.

Like its Kia Cerato cousin, the Hyundai Avante LPI will most likely feature a 1.6-litre dedicated LPG engine (producing approximately 92kW) coupled to an electric motor.

Hyundai’s Media Specialist, Mr Stephen Howard, told a disappointed CarAdvice today that:

“Hyundai brought this vehicle out (to Australia) for initial local testing, however we can now confirm we will not be receiving this vehicle.

“The vehicle is still in Australia and is still going through evaluation by our technical teams for HMC.”

If Hyundai release this hybrid with an affordable drive away price it will grab a large part of the hybrid market. Not only is LPG – Electric hybrid a stroke of genius as far as running cost is concerned, The car itself is a more traditional shape / style than the Pirus and will be easier for quite a few conservative buyers to live with.

I saw a masked up ix-35 on lane cove rd this morning (car bra front and back) – about 2 kms from head office. I wasnt snappy enough to take the pic as i was going the other way at 70 clicks!!!!

Why dont they give them to real people to test, and not head office execs!!!!!

      My hand is up!

    Formally ‘Elantra’, not Lantra.

Well, to be fair, it USED to be the Lantra in early iterations. Hyundai didn’t use the Elantra tag on those early models to avoid confusion with the Elante marketed by Mitsubishi. When the Elante finished up, Hyundai could then switch to the Elantra name. So the author gets 1/2 a mark.

It’s funny that there has to be a big sign on the back telling the driver behind the car is Left Hand Drive. Typical of a country that has “Pet Food Only” on cat food tins.

I thought Hyundai said they have canned this [for now?]

So much “might not run proper on our mix of LPG” funny thing is Korean gas comes from Australia! NO ISSUE at all, a smoke screen.

This is THE cheapest car to run on $/km basis, [AND BY A MASSIVE MARGAIN]c/raps
all over a hybrid and stinky cancer causing DIEsel both overpriced.

Up to sister company/clone Kia Cerato now to be the first for sale in Oz.

LESS than $24k KIA and I WILL BUY ONE

    Cheers
