Top 5 Sports cars in Australia

Continuing in the tradition of the Top 5 list here at Car Advice and following from last weeks Top 5 Supercars in Australia, today I will go over what I believe are the top 5 sports cars in Australia. I have limited the price to a maximum of $65,000 to disallow the likes of AMG Mercs and M powered BMWs to give a more affordable and realistic look at 2006's best Sports Cars in Australia.

Out of the top 5 cars which I have decided to include in this list, 3 are Turbo charged, one is a Rotary and the other is naturally aspirated. Turbo charged cars used to attract a great deal of negative coverage, from the whole "cheap performance" comments coming in from the V8 crowd (showing a good deal of ignorance towards the mostly Japanese Turbo Cars), to the idea that Turbo Charged engines wouldn't last past 100,000kms, a great deal has changed in the last 10 or so years.

The European's have brought us more and more turbo charged cars (not just in Diesel) as even BMW has realized that Turbo powered cars are here to stay and are releasing their first Turbo charged 3 series (the BMW 335i) very soon. While in the mean time, Japanese car manufacturers have captured the minds and hearts of many car fans by continuing to produce more and more turbo charged cars.

Nonetheless, a sports car doesn't have to be turbo (or super) charged to be good, there is a lot more to a sports car than straight line speed. The driving dynamics, the handling, the equipment level and not to mention the sex appeal and looks are also very important. So with all this in mind, here are Car Advice's top 5 sports cars in Australia.

You might have been slightly surprised that I decided to give the number 1 sports car for 2006 prize to the Mazda RX-8, not only because the car has been available since 2003, but because its such an.. odd.. sports car. It uses a rotary engine to begin with, making it the only car sold (in mass) in Australia that uses this type of engine ... Read more

It is so hard to not put this car in the number 1 spot for the best sports car you can buy for less than $65,000. Starting at $56,789 the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, most often referred to as simply "The Evo" is the best offering from the Japanese car maker since the days of the Mitsubishi 3000GT (GTO)... I am a big Subaru fan, I am sure you have realized it by now, Subary are safe, Subaru are reliable, and Subaru are bloody fast! The WRX STi has always been the best thing to come out of Subaru, the Liberty B4 (GT) is up there as well but nonetheless, the WRX STi is like a chocolate cake with triple layers of cheese, stuffed with Ferrero Rocher and served with cream. In other words, some people like it, some people hate it. ... Read more

This car is relatively hard to explain, the reason is that most people don't understand the Nissan 350z, they don't get the point of spending so much money on just a Nissan. Okay lets admit it, Nissan don't exactly have the best credibility in the world when it comes to reliability, nevertheless they have a sporting heritage richer than many European and Australian manufacturers such as, dare I say it, Holden and Ford... You know I am sure you are wondering how the heck this car made it to this list, I mean all the other cars come from Japan and you might have picked up by now that I am not Ford or Holden's biggest fan when it comes to performance cars. Nonetheless, I honestly couldn't let this car drop out of the top 5 sports cars in Australia. This is a car made in Australia that caused such a stir when it first came out, when the clutch failure put it out of contention, and when it came back. This is the best thing to have ever come out of Ford's performance division (Ford Performance Vehicles - FPV). It is, the Ford Typhoon.... Read more
