Range Rover Sport Coupe could be company’s first EV, will share parts with Jaguar F-Pace – report

The so-called Range Rover Sport Coupe, spied testing recently, could become the British marque's first all-electric vehicle (EV) when it launches either next year or 2018, according to a new report.

Britain's Autocar speculates the new style-focused SUV could offer a battery-electric powertrain that will also be offered in Jaguar's anticipated 'I-Pace' - believed to an electric version of the recently-launched F-Pace - which is likely to be revealed over the next year as well.

The British publication claims the Range Rover Sport Coupe will in fact have a lot in common with the F-Pace, including its all-aluminium architecture, suspension set-up, and the majority of its engine range - contrary to previous speculation that it would be mechanically near-identical to its wagon companion.

Expect a range of four-, six- and eight-cylinder petrol and turbo-diesel engines in addition to the all-electric powertrain.

The Range Rover Sport Coupe EV will help the luxury off-road brand to hit a new target introduced in California to have 15 per cent fleet mix of battery-electric vehicles between 2018 and 2025.

It's also expected that Range Rover will offer a hybrid option for markets like Europe, the US and China, likely the diesel-electric combination currently offered in the Range Rover Sport wagon.

Back in July, spy photographers snapped a heavily-disguised prototype doing rounds of the Nurburgring race-track, indicating the company is focusing on dynamics as much as, if not more than, off-road ability.

Other details of the new Range Rover are few and far between, though it's believed the coupe will be revealed sometime next year for a late-2017 or early-2018 launch.
