2017 Audi A5, S5 Cabriolets revealed

The second-generation 2017 Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolets have been revealed this week, joining the Coupe and Sportback bodies in the line-up.

While the new car looks very similar to the model that preceded it, the new A5 and S5 Cabriolets wear a sharper and more angular design that has already been adopted by their Coupe and Sportback siblings, along with other new-generation models in the company’s new-generation range including the A4, Q5, Q7, TT and R8.

Like its roofed siblings, the A5 and S5 convertibles are underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s MLB architecture for front- and all-wheel drive vehicles with longitudinal engines, helping the drop-top models to shed up to 40kg over its predecessor while torsional stiffness has been increased by 40 per cent.

Measuring 4673mm long, the new drop-top is a significant 47mm longer than its predecessor, while a 14mm longer wheelbase help improve space for the driver and passengers.

Thanks to its increased dimensions, the new convertible sports 26mm in extra shoulder room and 18mm more kneeroom.

Also growing in size is the Cabriolet’s boot, which is now an impressive 380L, 50L up on the car it replaces. The fully automatic acoustic fabric ‘hood’ opens and closes at speeds of up to 50km/h.

Inside, the A5 and S5 Cabriolets feature seatbelt microphones for the driver and front passenger as standard, which Audi says help to improve voice quality even with the roof down.

As with the rest of the A5/S5 range, the Cabriolet models are available with a variety of technology and driver assistance options.

Tech-wise the options include Audi’s Virtual Cockpit 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8.3-inch MMI navigation plus infotainment system; with Audi smartphone interface for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DVD drive and 10GB hard drive, along with Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen 3D sound system.

Up to 30 driver assistance systems can be optioned, including adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go function and traffic jam assist - relieving driving duties at speeds of up to 65km/h by accelerating and braking the car, while also the steering in certain conditions - along with collision avoidance assist, turn assist, park assist, rear cross traffic alert, exit warning, traffic sign recognition, active lane assist and side assist.

Also available are full-LED and Matrix-LED headlight systems, with xenon units fitted as standard.

Three engines will be available in the A5 Cabriolet at launch; the 185kW 2.0 TFSI, 140kW 2.0 TDI along with a 160kW 3.0 TDI. Joining the range later on will be an entry-level 140kW 2.0 TFSI along with a 210kW 3.0 TDI.

Audi says the new engines offer up to 17 per cent more power as the previous line-up while also consuming up to 22 per cent less fuel.

Shifting gears will be the choice of a six-speed manual, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch or eight-speed tiptronic transmission depending on model, with drive sent to the front wheels or to all four via the company’s quattro all-wheel drive system - standard on the 210kW 3.0 TDI.

Audi S5 Cabriolet

Like the Coupe and Sportback versions, the drop-top S5 is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, producing 260kW of power and 500Nm of torque - 15kW more than its predecessor.

0-100km/h takes 5.1 seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

An eight-speed tiptronic transmission sends drive to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

Australia

The new Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolets will arrive in European showrooms in March 2017, starting at 49,350 euros for the A5 ($71,267) and 67,800 euros for the S5 ($97,911).
