MG Motor Australia has relaunched the iconic British-born brand in Australia with the introduction of the 2017 MG 3 hatch and the 2017 MG 6 Plus fastback.

There was something missing, however: the much newer MG GS SUV that went on sale in Europe earlier this year.

At the official local launch of the MG 3 and the MG 6 Plus in Sydney, tMG Motor Australia business development senior manager, Andrew Huenerbein, indicated that we will likely see an MG SUV at some point in the future – but for now the company remains focussed on the MG 3 and MG 6 Plus.

Huenerbein was not easily moved to talk about any potential future models, however. “I think over time it will happen. What we really want to talk about today though is MG3 and MG6 Plus and let any other products that could come to market shine for themselves and have their own day in the sun.”

Huenerbein made it clear, the Australian arm of MG, owned by Chinese company SAIC Motor, is determined to see through settling-in the two new models – after a false start in 2014 – before introducing new vehicles.

“The brand has these products. So it would be something that we’d be looking at, but it would have to be the right timing,” he said.

Australia has a strong SUV market and the MG GS, initially unveiled in China at the end of 2015, was MG’s first SUV and a production version of the MG CS concept car that we first saw back in 2013 at the Shanghai motor show.

Currently available in overseas markets, the MG GS is built on a scalable platform developed by SAIC Motor and was a joint project between the company’s design and engineering teams based in Shanghai, China and Longbridge, England.
