2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 revealed

The all-new 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 has been revealed, with the new super saloon touted as being the most powerful E-Class of all time.

Under the bonnet of the powerhouse E-Class model is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which, in E63 S specification, pumps out a massive 450kW of power and 850Nm of torque.

Those outputs are enough to help the 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 to sprint from 0-100km/h in a claimed time of just 3.4 seconds, while the E63 S's top speed is rated at 250km/h, or 300km/h with the AMG Driver's Package.

The regular E63 will use the same drivetrain but in a lower state of tune, with a measly 420kW of power and 750Nm of torque and a 0-100km/h time of 3.5sec.

The new E63 makes use of dual twin-scroll turbochargers that are said to "boost performance ad improve responsiveness" of the engine, while there's also AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation tech, which can make the car run on four cylinders under low load.

Australia is likely to get only the top-end E63 S offering, as has been the case for most AMG twin-prong models for a while now.

The new-generation E63 AMG will - as we've reported previously - eschew rear-wheel drive for the company's 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, which in the E63 S will include a new standard Drift Mode for those who miss rear-drive E63s of old. In "Race" mode the electronic stability system is deactivated when the transmission is in manual mode, and the car "becomes purely rear-wheel drive".

The company claims the new AWD system "brings together the advantages of various drive configurations: torque distribution on the front and rear axles, which is fully variable for the first time, ensures optimum traction right up to the physical limit".

The transmission is a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic with paddle-shifters, and the AMG transmission has a wet start-off clutch for the first time.

As well as being the most hardcore E63 ever, Mercedes-AMG is claiming that the new model will offer better comfort than ever, too. The new AMG sports suspension uses air suspension that is said to offer "very high camber stability for impressive cornering speeds", while "the excellent vehicle dynamics and steering precision are also combined with a high level of comfort".

As for the styling of the flagship E-Class model, everything from the A-pillar forward is new, including the new coupe-like bonnet, flared guards that are 17 millimetres wider than standard, beefier bumper and new grille.

Inside, the E63 S seen here sports a premium vibe with racy touches, like the crested head restraints, blue ambient lighting and lashings of carbon trim.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG E63 - whether it comes just as the S or in both trim lines - will be available in Australia in the third quarter of 2017. Stay tuned for more news, including the full pricing and specs, closer to the launch date.
