2018 Mercedes-Benz ute:: next week’s concept preview teased

A concept previewing the new Mercedes-Benz ute has been teased in a video just days before its official unveiling in Stockholm, Sweden.

To be revealed on October 25 (European time), the concept car will preview the brand's first mainstream ute model. Under the skin, the Mercedes-Benz ute uses the same platform as the Nissan Navara, as well as the forthcoming Renault Alaskan.

Despite the shadowy lighting, we can see that the Mercedes-Benz concept ute will feature unique exterior body panels, except for possibly the rear doors and roof.

Up front, the concept ute features slim headlights, a bold grille, and an aggressive AMG-style front bumper design. Along the sides the concept features less bulky wing mirrors, squarer wheel arches, and less fluid surfacing.

At the New York motor show, Ola Källenius, the man in charge of marketing Mercedes-Benz cars globally, confirmed to CarAdvice that the new ute will be offered as both a working vehicle and a lifestyle car.

He admitted that while an AMG styling kit may be available for the ute, a high performance AMG model is off the table for now.

A leak in January revealed that the new ute will be offered solely as a dual-cab model, and will likely be badged as the X-Class. Power will reportedly come from either the Navara's 2.3-litre turbo-diesel engine, with a six-cylinder diesel motor also possible.

Australia
According to a model plan leaked in July, the Mercedes-Benz ute will go on sale globally during the second half of 2017. That will likely mean an Australian launch towards at the end of 2017 or near the beginning of 2018.
