2017 Volkswagen Tiguan R potentially spied outside the Nurburgring

The Volkswagen Tiguan R, or at least a potential prototype of the rumoured hot SUV, has been spied outside the Nurburgring race track.

Without even a hint of disguise, this car nearly slipped completely under the radar, but the spy photographer who took this set of pictures noted that the car was "very loud".

While it wears an R-Line styling package that's available for buyers of the second-generation Tiguan, this car does feature four exhaust tips compared to the regular car's two.

It should also be noted that this car was stored at Volkswagen and Audi's facilities at the Nurburgring, so it's unlikely that this vehicle was developed by an outside tuning company.

If this Tiguan does prove to be a harbinger of a hot R version, it will likely feature a version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that already does service in the Golf R.

In Europe and many major markets, the Golf R has 221kW of power and 380Nm of torque at its disposal. For Australia and other countries with hot weather climates, the engine has been detuned to deliver 206kW.

Any production version of the Tiguan R will likely feature a new body kit, different alloy wheels, larger brakes, and standard all-wheel drive.
