2017 Honda CR-V unveiled in the US

The fifth-generation Honda CR-V has been unveiled in the US, ahead of its debut in Australia likely to be sometime next year.

Stylistically, the new CR-V isn't as big or as bold a departure from the previous model as the generational change recently undertaken by the related Civic.

Honda has yet to provide numbers related to the car's dimensions, but says that the new crossover features a longer wheelbase and roomier interior.

Depending on the model, the new CR-V is available with automatic high beam activation, rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, remote engine start, high resolution instrumentation screen, heated wing mirrors, electronic parking brake, rear USB ports, heated front and rear seats, and electric adjustment for both front seats.

Top-end models also feature a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android-driven interface, satellite navigation, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In the US, the CR-V will be available with two four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engines: a naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre, and a 142kW 1.5-litre turbo. In the States, both engines are mated exclusively to a CVT, with all-wheel drive optional throughout most of the range.

To improve aerodynamic efficiency, the new CR-V is the first Honda model available with active grille shutters. The CR-V is also the first Honda vehicle to feature a hands-free tailgate, which can be opened by waggling your foot under the rear bumper.

The design of the cabin and use of soft touch materials, including faux leather on the dashboard, give the new car a classier look than the current model. Just as importantly, the company has engineered the new CR-V with thinner A-pillars for improved outward visibility.

The crossover rides on either 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, and utilises MacPherson strut suspension up front, and a multi-link setup at the rear.

Australia

The new Honda CR-V goes on sale around December in the States, and should arrive in Australia during the second half of 2017.
