2017 BMW 5 Series surfaces online in leaked images

The all-new 2017 BMW 5 Series has been given an unscheduled debut today, just hours out from its official world premiere tomorrow morning.

Full details on the big new sedan are still to come, although BMW has handed down no shortage of clues and preliminary details in recent weeks.

These images, posted to enthusiast community GermanCar4um and published by website CarScoops, confirm the new 5er's styling will follow an evolutionary line.

The new G30 model's look is no great leap from that of its F10 predecessor, although an overall longer and wider appearance was clearly the guiding rule.

Elements of the smaller mid-sized 3 Series and big new 7 Series' design can be seen here, from the long deeply wrapped character lines and low-set brake vent (faux or genuine), to the 'merged' look of the headlights and grille - a styling feature making its way across the wider BMW range.

BMW hasn't revealed much in the way of details for its new 5er, although it has confirmed we can expect the same multi-material 'Cluster Architecture' that underpins the bigger 7 Series.

With that in play, expect kerb weight to drop around 100kg from the circa-1460kg heft of the F10 model.

Powering the 5 Series will be a selection of turbocharged four-, six-, and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, while a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is also expected to join the range at some point.

Watch for the new 2017 BMW 5 Series to be detailed in full, tomorrow, October 13.
