Mystery AMG C63 spied at the Nurburgring – video: New ‘R’ or Black Series model coming?

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe is already a tyre-shredding menace, but there could be an even hotter ‘R’ version on the way if this prototype doing rounds at the Nurburgring circuit is anything to go by.

Wearing a more aggressive aero package with a large racing-style wing, this blue C63 Coupe could be our first look at a flagship ‘R’ variant, set to take on the track-focused BMW M4 GTS.

It’s very likely the C63 R will be powered by an uprated version of the ‘regular’ car’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which in its current ‘S’ form produces 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque - expect a figure around 400kW.

However, there’s no guarantee that this hardcore AMG C-Class will be branded with an ‘R’ like the Mercedes-AMG GT R. It may spearhead the return of the ‘Black Series’ name worn by the previous-generation hardcore C-Class variant, along with the CLK, SL and SLS.

Timing of the track-focused C63 is unknown, with no mention of the new model in the company’s product roadmap revealed earlier this year, however this car looks pretty close to production guise and is wearing very little camouflage.

With that in mind the C63 R/C63 Black Series could be revealed within a year, so stay tuned to CarAdvice for more updates over the coming months.
