Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck unveiled

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck has been revealed in production form, capable of zero-emissions driving for up to 200 kilometres.

With a permissible gross weight of 26 tonnes, the Urban eTruck promises no emissions and silent operation. Powering the electric truck are an electrically-powered rear axle and electric motors adjacent to the wheel hubs.

Mercedes-Benz claims figures of 125kW and 500Nm for each of the rear wheel pairs, fuelled by a 212kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

According to the German manufacturer, the Urban eTruck’s claimed range of up to 200 kilometres is “normally enough for a typical day’s delivery round”.

Inside, the electric load-lugger features a digital instrument cluster, switchable driving modes - auto, agile (power mode) and eco (maximum range) - while information systems tell the driver whether planned haulage work can be completed within the eTruck's driving range.

In terms of styling, the Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck still looks like a truck, but features numerous futuristic and aerodynamic elements that help it to stand out from its diesel-burning brethren.

A prominent spoiler connects the cab with the body, while a large air intake up front feeds air into the truck’s cooling system.

Skirts run along the sides of the cab, aiding aerodynamics, while the conventional side mirrors have been replaced with camera systems.

Slim headlights feature LED technology, while the front grille also sports LED lighting to convey the truck’s operating status and battery charge.

In July, the company revealed a prototype version of the Urban eTruck, detailing its initial specifications including outputs and driving range.

At the July reveal, Mercedes-Benz said the Urban eTruck charges its batteries on its road via regenerative braking, and connects to the grid via a Type 2 Combined Charging System - capable of 150kW charging power.

With the new electric freight vehicle, Mercedes-Benz is taking the fight to the upcoming Tesla Semi and Nikola One trucks - though it’s unknown exactly when the German marque will put the Urban eTruck into production.

The Nikola One will use a hydrogen fuel cell to power its electric motors when it launches in December this year.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, recently detailed his plans to release an all-electric semi trailer in part two of his ‘Master Plan’, though timing of this vehicle has not been announced.
