2017 Audi Q2 here in February:: $41,100 starting price for new baby SUV – UPDATE

Update - The original version of this article didn't include claimed European fuel consumption figures for the 1.4 TFSI model, and didn't mention the inclusion of Cylinder-on-Demand (COD) technology for the entry-level variant. See article for details

The 2017 Audi Q2 will become the company’s “most attainable” SUV model when it arrives in Australia in February next year, starting at $41,100 plus on-road costs.

When it lands down under, the Q2 will be offered in two variants; one petrol and one diesel, with another petrol variant to join the range later in the year.

Kicking off the range is the 1.4 TFSI petrol, producing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels. The base unit features Cylinder-on-Demand (COD) technology that can shut down two of the four cylinders under light throttle loads.

Claimed fuel consumption for the base 1.4-litre petrol is 5.2L/100km on the combined New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Second in the range is the 2.0 TDI quattro, generating 110kW and 340Nm from its four-cylinder diesel, sent to all four wheels.

Later on in the year the flagship 2.0 TFSI quattro will join the line-up, powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol generating 140kW of power and 320Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption figures for the latter two powertrains are yet to be released, though all models will come equipped with a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard.

Standard kit throughout the range includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection at up to 85km/h, MMI navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice control, along with a rear-view camera.

Final specifications will be revealed closer to the Q2’s February launch.

The Q2 will also offer numerous features and technologies from the company’s more premium models as well - though most, if not all, will be cost options.

Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster will be available, along with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist and rear-cross traffic alert.

Upgrading the infotainment to MMI Navigation plus adds a touchpad, Google Earth and Google Search functionality along with a Wi-Fi hotspot.

LED ambient lighting will be available, allowing owners to customise the colours and intensity of the lighting in the cabin.

Speaking of customisation, the Q2 will be available in a range of colours and combinations, with buyers able to choose from a variety of exterior colours, with contrasting roof, bumpers and trims.

Even the C-pillar can be specified in four different shades; black, grey, silver and white.

Most of these options will be offered in packages, though details of these will be revealed closer to launch.

At 4190mm long, 1790mm wide and 1510mm tall, the Q2 is roughly 200mm shorter than its larger Q3 sibling.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Q2 boasts a 405-litre boot with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1050 with the second row folded down.

That is 55/315L less than the Q3 respectively, making it a capable load lugger for those wanting a smaller package.

With the range kicking off at $41,100 plus on-roads, the Q2 1.4 TFSI is only $1800 less than the base Q3 with the same drivetrain.

The Q2 does, however, shift gears through the newer seven-speed dual-clutch, as opposed to the Q3’s six-speeder.

Available to order now, the first Audi Q2 in Australia will be touring the east side of Australia over the coming month, with Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne all on the destination list.
