Mahindra Pik-Up ute now available in WA

By Matt Brogan |

The Mahindra Pik-Up ute will go on sale in Western Australia this month with four new dealerships adding to the 20 existing along the east coast.

Mahindra Australia CEO Claire Tynan said the addition of ABS and airbags as standard on the latest Pik-Up, as well as new Australian made seatbelts and load pretensioners would make the vehicle appealing to the new market.

“As per our market in the east coast, the Pik-Up is likely to appeal to tradies and farmers, but will also be of much interest to the mining community which is very exciting for us.”

Dealers in Rockingham, Melville, Bunbury and Geraldton expect that the vehicle will appeal to working-class buyers in WA.

Midwest Mahindra dealer principal, Brett Micallef, said he believed the diesel would be a popular option in Geraldton.

“As successful as the vehicle has been in rural areas across the Eastern Seaboard, we believe the Mahindra Pik-Up will be as appealing here locally.  Particularly given all of the safety and extra standard features the newest model offers, we think this is a well priced workhorse that any buyer should consider in the mix.”

Tynan refuses to submit Mahindra’s sales figures to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries to avoid being “scrutinised every month”, but the Indian company is believed to sell less than 1000 vehicle per year.

However, Tynan expects to turn that around with the expansion into WA, as well as the introduction of the four-wheel drive Scorpio wagon in the first half of 2010 and the Xylo people mover which is under consideration.

“as well as new Australian made seatbelts and load pretensioners would make the vehicle appealing to the new market”. How can adding aussie made seat belts make that appealing to us ???? lol

    • Sammy

Well at least there is some aussie content.

    • Dlr1

you can only assume the standard fitment indian seatbelts were of such low quality they failed ADR testing.

I think Great Wall utes will kill Mahindra in australia.

    • http://skyline The Salesman

At least you car get this in a diesel. Great Wall is petrol only.

  • Dank

Seriously you would be the laughing stock of all your mates if you rocked up in one of these….. and the great wall utes are no better….
It looks like the car that homer simpson designed….but worse!

  • Baddass

I feel strange saying this, but the updated Pik-up looks genuinely tough. The front reminded me of a more focused first gen BMW X5! However, the Scorpio and Xylo are truly awful.

It would make an excellent 2nd car to compliment the looks of the Skoda in your garage!

On a serious note, as a workhorse on property what is really wrong with it? Unless it gets mistaken for a Skoda pik up!

    • Baddass

Sorry, was that a joke? I appreciate good-looking cars. Do you have a problem with that?

  • JooberGTI

    Price?

I agree with Dank, this will really only pick up on those non-masculane tradies…, or those who do not really socially interact with other tradies. For that, they’d rather pick up a 2nd hand Hilux, triton, navara, rodeo etc.

But things change, give it time and this car will somehow become acceptable in the market…

That thing looks like a tractor, and probably drives like one.

This “article” reads like an advertorial.

I bet people in WA are overwhelmed by this exciting news…

    Nice article. :-)

How about a new name – ‘Put Down’ would be more appropriate I think.

If it gets to the drill site without falling to bits not really worried about appearances. Looks fine anyway who cares. Beats paying 50 grand for a toyota, and its not like cruisers are stylish. willing to give it a go. Actually I will let someone else give it a go and see how they go.

Well I have heard the comments and sit back and smile.
If this handles anything like the old Mahindra (Jeep look a like) then put me up for one. those things could not be stopped.
If this is anything like that…. yeap you got it right I will certainly grab one.
Scratches and dints only go to character and being able to put it through its passes would be worth it.
Besides I don’t hear any one complain about Landrover or Jaguar both owned and manufactured by TATA; yeap, thats right they are both Indian and they seem ok.
