Weekend Deals on Wheels for September 17

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which this week looks at six factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

Suzuki Swift GL — $14,990 drive-away

One of Australia's best-loved light cars is the subject of strong campaigns at the moment, going for a very affordable $14,990 drive-away, down from the usual recommended retail price (RRP) before on-road charges of $15,990.

If you're happy to shift your own gears and buy the five-speed manual version, it's a great buy, because the little Swift is one of the nippiest and most characterful cars in the class.

The cabin may not be modern, but you get USB connectivity, seven airbags and a five-star ANCAP rating. And one thing we know about Suzukis is they're cheap to own and run, and have proved to be relatively bulletproof. If you buy before the end of Saturday, Suzuki will also throw in $400 worth of accessories at no charge.

Toyota Camry Altise — $27,990 drive-away

Okay, look, it's a Camry. A boring Camry. But if you really don't care about your daily driver beyond it being spacious and reliable (or, you're an enterprising Uber driver), then the Aussie-made icon is ideal.

Toyota needs scale to keep the local plant operating for another year, and to do so it's offering razor-sharp deals.

The base Camry sports a 2.5-litre petrol engine, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, a 6.1-inch screen with rear-view camera, Bluetooth and seven airbags. Huge back seats and boot too. It's basically a family-sized sedan for the price of a mid-range small car. Pound-for-pound it's a good deal.

Additionally, Toyota Australia is currently offering zero per cent comparison rate if you want to finance. And why wouldn't you. Bland but safe.

Ford Mondeo Trend — $38,990 drive-away

The Ford Mondeo hatch is one of the best mid-sized cars on the market. It's absolutely cavernous inside, well-equipped and drives nicely, thanks to soft suspension yet good body control, and a punchy turbo-petrol engine.

The current $38,990 deal is a good few grand off the RRP plus on-road figure offered before this factory campaign, and you'd have to look seriously in the Ford's direction if a capacious sedan/hatch is what you're after.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloys, reversing camera, heated seats, radar cruise control, autonomous brakes, lane monitor, dual-zone climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with satellite-navigation. Loaded.

Audi A6 1.8 TFSI or 2.0 TDI — $76,990 drive-away

It's a well-known 'secret' that you can wrangle a killer deal on a large luxury sedan, and this one is no exception.

These two Audi A6 variants (petrol and diesel) have RRPs before on-roads of more than $80,000, equating to an ostensible price in the $90k range before haggling.

Moreover, Audi is throwing in the Technik package, which adds options such as park assist, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control and autonomous braking.

Based on our experiences in the A6, it's a sensational (albeit dull) luxury car, with a sublime cabin ambience second only to the bling-y Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and brilliant, cosseting ride.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo — $49,000 to $56,000 drive-away

You're saving close to $10,000 off the regular RRP (plus on-roads) with this drive-away deal. Given the way Jeep's sales have been plummeting over the past few years, it's easy to see why the brand is discounting.

The diesel Grand Cherokee remains one of the coolest SUVs you can buy, and this variant is the pick of the range. It's a properly off-road capable, upmarket crossover, and is especially good with the $7000 more expensive diesel option (big hike).

You get Jeep's Quadra-Trac 4x4 system with Selec-Terrain mode, plus a Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice command and Bluetooth. Jeep will also throw in satellite-navigation.

To the elephant in the room: recalls. No car has been recalled more of late than the Jeep, but consider that these issues are all fixed under warranty and usually quick to sort. Your call. We still say that, under warranty, it's a fair bet.

Volkswagen Amarok Highline TDI420 8AT — $53,990 drive-away

The Volkswagen Amarok is now on final runout ahead of the launch of an updated model, with a class-topping V6 diesel, touching down soon.

That means buyers can get a deal on a version with a 2.0-litre (132kW/420Nm) turbo-diesel with eight-speed automatic transmission for $53,990 drive-away (down from the usual $56,990 plus on-road price).

The Amarok Highline gets 4x4, plus bi-xenon headlights, a rear-view camera, stainless steel side steps and sports bar, and satellite navigation. At this price it undercuts equivalent Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux variant, and it's clearly one of the best to drive (on-road), though its 3.0-tonne towing capacity falls 500kg short.
