Weekend Deals on Wheels for September 10

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which this week looks at six factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

Haggle hard, and happy shopping. If you spot any deals, let us know in the comments.

Ford Fiesta Sport — $20,990 drive-away

Ford is struggling to sell the Fiesta this year, with sales down 41 per cent and its market share plummeting to only 3.0 per cent. But it’s also one of the very best light cars you can buy, so now is the time to strike.

The Fiesta Sport packs a brilliant little turbocharged triple with 92kW/170Nm that oozes character and charm, a slick five-speed manual box (for those keen on a third pedal) and potentially the very best dynamics at the price point. It’s a razor-like warm hatch.

The cabin may be dated, but you get a five-star ANCAP rating, Bluetooth, cruise control, 16-inch alloys, part-leather seats and sports suspension. It’s about the best $21k you can spend on a new car if you’re looking for fun.

Given the RRP of the Fiesta Sport is $20,525 — equating to a rough drive-away price of $24,000 — this deal is a $3000 saving. Haggle harder and you should do even better.

Mazda Australia M Day deals

Mazda Australia’s marketing is gold. Rather than offer regular deals, it does it once a year and welcomes a stampede into its dealer network.

Its annual sale on this Saturday sees all Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, Mazda MX-5, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 models come with 12 months of registration and CTP for free, three years of standard roadside assist for free (we'd add that most other brands already offer this), an extra year of factory warranty and $500 worth of Mazda Genuine accessories.

It’s a nice sweetener if you were thinking of a Mazda. Remember also, that if dealers are under the pump to capitalise on such a good volume driver, it’s a good time to haggle hard. If you can brave the crowds.

Note: The brand new Mazda CX-9 is not eligible for M Day additional offers.

Skoda Fabia 81TSI — $19,490 drive-away

Yes, another light car. The thing is, right now with light car sales in the doldrums, a lot of car-makers are incentivising.

The flagship Skoda Fabia 81TSI with seven-speed DSG automatic is going for $19,490 drive-away at present, a saving of more than $3000 over RRP plus on-road costs.

To sweeten the deal further, Skoda is throwing in a free five-year warranty (up from the regular three-year term), five years of scheduled servicing (at 12-month/15,000km intervals) and five years of roadside assist. The catch? You need to use Skoda Finance.

Still, as you can read in our Fabia reviews here, it’s one of the best light cars you can buy. Note, you can nab the less powerful 66TSI manual Fabia for $16,490 if you like swapping your own cogs.

All Fabias get five-star safety, autonomous brakes, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a reversing camera as standard. Good get.

BMW 125i with M Sport Pack — $49,900 drive-away

We’ve recommended this one before, but it’s worth a revisit. Given the recommended retail price (RRP) of this German performance hatch is $48,900 before on-road costs, you’re saving thousands with this deal.

The 1 Series has a unique selling point, in that it is rear-wheel drive. This version has a 165kW/310Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine that is up there with the Golf GTI, and comes with either an eight-speed auto or six-speed manual for the same price.

Worth a look for potential hot hatch buyers, right? The Golf GTI may actually be the more rounded car, but the 125i is rear-drive, and it has that BMW badge. Small wonder it makes up 34 per cent of all 1 Series sales in Australia.

Hyundai Tucson Active X — from $29,990 drive-away

The Hyundai Tucson is one of our favourite medium SUVs, one that deserves its status as a top seller (behind the Mazda CX-5, but close to the top).

But as you can read in our comparison test, the Active X variant would be almost perfect if only it had either a little more spec, or was a little cheaper.

Thankfully Hyundai is coming to the table at the moment, with factory-backed deals on this Active X for $29,990 (manual) or $31,990 (auto) drive-away, which is more than $5000 off.

The 2.0-litre front-drive Active X sports Australian-developed suspension that makes the car ride more comfortably than any of its rivals, a spacious and practical cabin, five-star safety, Apple CarPlay, leather seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

This is in addition to Hyundai’s lifetime capped-price servicing, five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside support. Honestly, if we had $32k to spend on a new family SUV, this would probably be it right now.

Mitsubishi Triton GLS — $39,990 drive-away with auto

The high-end Mitsubishi Triton GLS dual-cab is good value at $39,990 drive-away with a free auto. Over the RRP plus on-roads, it’s a pre-haggle saving of about $8000. Sure, Tritons are usually discounted, but this is one sharp deal.

You get dual-range 4x4 with Mitsubishi’s excellent Super Select system, a 133kW/430Nm 2.4 turbo-diesel, five-speed auto, and a 3.1-tonne braked towing capacity.

Inside is a reversing camera in a 6.1-inch screen with Display Audio, DAB+, Bluetooth, nice cloth trim, five-star safety and ISOFIX. You also get 17-inch alloy wheels, a sports bar, and side steps.

Sure, it ain’t pretty, but it’s a loaded ute that’ll be dependable, and has all the refinement and mod-cons to be a liveable daily driver and weekend warrior. Deals like this is why Mitsubishi deserves the sales success it gets. A good, honest truck.

Don’t forget the company’s five-year/100,000km warranty and capped-price servicing for peace-of-mind, too.
