The 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show in November, according to a teaser image released by the company.

On the “save the date” notice, a dark silhouette of the brand’s first SUV is visible, showing a sloping roofline and a long bonnet – something that we have seen on the prototypes spied testing over the past year.

The Italian marque’s first SUV was originally believed to be bound for the Paris motor show next month, though this promotional image proves this isn’t the case.

Underpinning the Stelvio will be the same ‘Giorgio’ platform that forms the basis of the Giulia sedan, developed for rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles.

Powering the Stelvio will likely be a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from its sedan-bodied sibling.

In Europe the Giulia is available with a 112kW/380Nm or 134kW/450Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, while in China and the US a 149kW/330Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is offered.

Reports suggest the range will be headlined by a hi-po Quadrofoglio variant, powered by the same Ferrari-developed 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 380kW of power and 600Nm of torque.

The regular Stelvio range will take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar F-Pace, and Audi Q5 when it launches sometime in 2017.

Meanwhile, the QV performance flagship gives Alfa Romeo a rival to more dynamic offerings like the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC63, the Porsche Macan Turbo, Jaguar F-Pace S and the ageing Audi SQ5 – which is likely to be replaced by an all-new model over the next year.

Given the numerous production delays that have hindered the company’s rollout of its next-generation models, it’s not unlikely we may get the new SUV a year after the European market.

Using that as a guide – along with the Giulia’s local launch early next year – the Stelvio isn’t likely to hit Australian showrooms until late next year, or even early 2018.

Stay tuned for our coverage of the Los Angeles motor show, which commences on November 15.
