2017 Ram 1500 Night unveiled in America: Big bad truck on local wish list

The 2017 Ram 1500 Night has been unveiled in the US, and it's about as American as it gets.

Combining a fair number of things we love about America - size, excess, the wildly unnecessary - the special edition Night package adds a touch of ‘gangsta’ to the already-cool 2017 Ram 1500 Sport.

Aimed at giving “truck enthusiasts straight-from-the-factory customised looks”, the Night pack comprises a blacked-out grille surround and Ram’s head grille badge, blacked-out flank and tailgate badging, and gloss black 20x9-inch aluminium wheels with Goodyear tyres.

Drawing inspiration from the 2013 Ram 1500 Black Express, the Night pack is also optionally available with a sport performance bonnet, black running boards, Mopar cat-back exhaust system and cold-air intake, as well as a driver-selectable ride height-adjustable ‘active-level’ four-corner air suspension system.

Being based on the Ram 1500 Sport, the 1500 Night comes decked-out with the Sport model’s standard dual chrome exhaust tips, body-coloured bumpers, door handles and power mirrors, heated 10-way power-adjustable cloth bucket seats, power-adjustable pedals, and dual-zone climate control.

The US is known as the land of opportunity, and, as such, Ram is offering the Night package on regular cab, quad-cab and crew-cab 1500 Sport models, in either two- or four-wheel drive, long or short bed lengths and, of course, with either a 227kW/365Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 or 295kW/556Nm 5.7-litre HEMI V8.

Colour choices also range from Bright Silver metallic, Bright White and Brilliant Black to Flame Red and Granite Crystal metallic.

For US fans, Ram says production of the 2017 Ram 1500 Night is due to kick off early in the fourth quarter, with pricing yet to be announced.

Meanwhile for us Aussies, the folks behind importing, converting, and distributing Ram trucks locally say, while not currently offered here, the 1500 – and variants such as the Night – is most definitely still on the wish list.

Speaking to CarAdvice, Edward Rowe, media and public relations consultant for the Ateco Group of companies, which includes American Special Vehicles (ASV) – a joint venture with the Walkinshaw Group – said, “At the moment our focus is on getting the Ram 2500 and 3500 into the Australian market and ensuring, with a full nationwide dealer network, that wherever a Ram owner roams, they will have full dealer support.”

“We will then look to grow the range, and the Ram 1500 is the obvious choice - given that in the USA, it is the leading variant of the Ram truck range, as well as offering interesting variants, of which the Night edition is the latest.”

With Ram being one of nine brands to sit under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) banner in the US, FCA Australia corporate communications director Lucy McLellan told CarAdvice, while she cannot comment on future product at this stage, “If there was ample market demand, coupled with the product being built in right-hand drive, then we would consider it”.
