2017 Genesis G70 spied testing: Hyundai’s luxury mid-sizer sneaks out

Hyundai's anticipated 2017 Genesis G70 sedan, confirmed late last year, has made its first public appearance - albeit in heavy camouflage.

Announced in November, the G70 will be the second new model in Hyundai's offshoot Genesis brand, joining the existing large Genesis car - now called G80 - and the new limo-sized G90 unveiled in December.

But, while the G90 has already been written off for the Australian market, the G70 is locked in for a local launch.

It was initially believed that this year's Genesis New York concept represented a first look at the coming G70, but these new photos suggest otherwise.

While the New York concept revealed hugely muscular proportions and wildly progressive lines, the vehicle spied testing in Germany this week wears a far more conventional - if still powerfully proportioned - look.

Heavy camouflage obscures the front and rear details, but it is clear through the profile view that Hyundai will be playing it safe with the G70's overall shape.

Nonetheless, buyers can expect the best of the rear-wheel-drive look: a long bonnet, swooping cabin with a tapered C-pillar, and a high rear deck.

The model shown here is clearly a sports offering with large sports wheels, dinner-plate brake rotors and a sports exhaust package (including, it would appear, space for a second pair of pipes on the left of the rear bumper).

The car in these images is likely tuned for performance by Hyundai's N division, although Genesis sports models are not expected to be marketed under the same N branding that will appear on Hyundai models.

Local specifications are still well off being confirmed, but the new 272kW/509Nm 3.3-litre turbocharged six recently launched into the G80 and G90 for overseas markets is expected to feature in the G70 - making it a handy rival to models like the AMG C43 and the BMW 340i.

Hyundai claims that in the big G90, the engine will deliver a 0-100km/h time of 6.2 seconds. In the mid-sized G70, that could easily move closer to to the 4.7 seconds claimed by the AMG C43.

Other engines are likely to include a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine lower down in the range, and possibly also a diesel option for certain markets. A plug-in hybrid model, based on the 180kW/353Nm system that featured in the New York concept, could also be on the cards.
