2017 Audi Q2 makes Australian debut at Hamilton Island Race Week

The first 2017 Audi Q2 in Australia has begun a tour down the east coast ahead of its official launch in February next year.

Making its debut at the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week in Queensland, the Q2 has been soaking up some Aussie sun and giving locals a first look at the new SUV before it hits showrooms.

Andrew Doyle, Audi Australia’s managing director, said the Q2 will bring a new benchmark in technology for the segment.

“This important new entry point into the Audi SUV range has its own distinctive design language, and when it arrives next year, it will really raise the bar for the level of technology available at this price point,” he said.

Competing against the likes of the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, the new Q2 joins the fastest growing segment in the market - small premium SUVs - which grew by 70 per cent between 2014 and 2015. By comparison, the total SUV market rose by 16 per cent.

The company believes the Q2 will attract a 50/50 split between male and female buyers, with ages ranging from 25 to 64 years old.

Audi Australia’s general manager for corporate communications, Anna Burgdorf, said at the model’s launch to expect local pricing to kick off around the $40,000 mark - very close to the larger Q3’s $42,900 (plus on-road costs) entry point.

Final pricing and specifications won’t be revealed until closer to launch, however the Q2 will initially be available in Australia with three engines; a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with cylinder-on-demand (COD) technology, a 140kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 110kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

The 1.4 TFSI will be offered with front-wheel drive, while the 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI will be offered with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

All three powerplants will be mated to a seven-speed ‘S Tronic’ dual-clutch transmission, though the 1.4 TFSI gets the current dry clutch unit while the 2.0-litre petrol and diesel receive the newly-developed wet clutch shifter, which is claimed to be faster and more refined.
