Tesla Model X:: Australian pricing and specifications for electric SUV

The full Australian-market configurator for the Tesla Model X all-wheel-drive pure electric crossover is now live, revealing more information on arguably the market’s most eagerly anticipated SUV.

The celebrate the occasion, Tesla flew two US-spec cars to Australia this week for an early preview, inviting hundreds of prospective buyers to get a feel for the car.

The Tesla Model X, Australian deliveries of which will begin in early 2017 (if you order today you’ll likely get your car around April), is the market’s only electric crossover, and comes in five-, six- or seven-seat cabin configurations. Segment rivals are the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and co.

It’s the Silicon Valley Superstar’s third model in its short history, and will become its top-seller in Australia if the luxury SUV market as a whole is anything to go by, until the smaller and cheaper Model 3 arrives in 2018.

Kicking off the Model X range is the 60D at a recommended retail price of $111,900 (NSW drive-away price of $134,165), a little cheaper than a BMW X5 40d. It has a 355km range and a 0-100km/h time of 6.2 seconds.

Standard features include regular over-the-air updates to active safety/navigation, free use of the Supercharger network, real-time mapping, electric AWD, side-collision avoidance, high-way-speed autonomous braking, blind-spot monitoring, LED headlights, electric tailgate, keyless entry, Falcon Wing doors and up to four ISOFIX anchors.

All Model Xs also come with the largest panoramic windshield in production (based on our experience, it’s quite amazing) and the most cabin storage in its class, up to 2180L. There’s also the ‘frunk’, a boot where the engine on a combustion car would go.

Updating to the Model X 75D (which you can buy new, or update to from your 60D for extra cost at any time) is $125,000 ($150,545 drive-away), and takes the range to 417km.

Next up the tree are the Model X 90D at $143,000 ($171,703 drive-away) with a 489km range, a 0-100km/h time of 5sec and Smart Air Suspension, and the Model X P90D at $172,100 ($211,424 drive-away), with a 467km range, 0-100km/h time of 3.9sec and an Active Spoiler.

The new range-topper is the Model X P100D at $201,100 ($251,009 drive-away) with a 100kWh battery, 542km range and a frankly insane 0-100km/h time of 3.1sec. This, naturally, comes with the brilliant Ludicrous mode.

Coming standard as a five-seater, the six-seat cabin can be optioned for $4350 and the seven-seater for $5800 (both only with the $3600 air suspension option box ticked).

Other options across the board include Auto Pilot semi-autonomous driving with Summon Mode ($4400); the Premium package with automatic-opening doors, a medical-grade cabin filtration system, ventilated front seats, extra leather and Alcantara trim, LED cabin lighting and more ($6500); the Ultra High Fidelity sound system for $3600; the Towing Package with up to 2.3-tonne towing capacity ($1100); and a High Amperage Charger update ($2200).

All Tesla Model Xs get an eight-year/infinite kilometre battery and drive unit warranty and a four-year/80,000km warranty on other features. Tesla Australia also offers a resale value guarantee.
