Abarth/Fiat 124 coupe under development – report UPDATE

Update - This article originally stated the Abarth 124 Spider would be released in Australia in October 2017, however the local launch is scheduled for October 2016. See article for details

The Abarth/Fiat 124 Spider could be joined by a fixed-roof coupe variant in as little a year’s time, according to a new report out of the UK.

Autocar reports that a coupe version of the recently-revealed MX-5-based convertible is understood to be under development and will be built at Mazda’s Hiroshima facility.

Unlike the soon-to-be released MX-5 RF, the Abarth/Fiat 124 coupe will employ a fixed roof as opposed to a retractable hard-top.

Design-wise, the 124 coupe could look something along the lines of the brightly-coloured Fiat Abarth 124 Rally concept that was revealed at the Geneva motor show in March.

According to the report, the 124 coupe’s powertrain is still being considered, with the company tossing up between the UK-market Fiat 124’s 104kW 1.4-litre turbo, the higher-output 119kW version available in the US, or the 127kW tune that is fitted to the Abarth 124 Spider, which will arrive in Australian showrooms next year.

It’s likely the 124 coupe, if it enters production, will be made available in both Fiat and Abarth versions, like the Spider.

Australia

Unlike the UK and US, Fiat Chrysler’s Australian arm has chosen to bring only the hotter Abarth 124 Spider to the local market, scheduled for launch in October.

Powered by a 127kW/250Nm 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo, the Abarth 124 is likely to be positioned against the top-spec Mazda MX-5 GT sister car, which is fitted with a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine (118kW/200Nm) and starts at $39,550 plus on-road costs.

Fiat's local arm has heard nothing regarding a hard-top version of the 124 Spider, with FCA Australia's director of communications, Lucy McLellan, telling CarAdvice that while no word on a 124 coupe has been given, the company is solely focused on launching the Abarth 124 Spider this October.
