2017 BMW 2 Series pricing and specifications: new engines, more equipment across the range

The 2017 BMW 2 Series coupe and convertible range has landed in Australia, bringing new 230i and M240i variants, along with the addition of more standard equipment across the range.

For the new model year the 2 Series benefits from similar power and specification upgrades seen in the recently-updated 1 Series range.

Starting at $51,300 plus on-road costs for the 220i coupe and $58,300 for the 220i convertible, the updated range kicks of $2400 higher than last year’s model.

The 220d diesel variant has also been dropped from the 2 Series range, meaning all variants are petrol powered.

For 2017, the 220i introduces a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which generates 135kW of power and 270Nm – up 5kW and 20Nm on last year’s model.

While outputs are up, fuel consumption is down, with the 220i claiming 5.8L/100km (down 0.2L) and 6.1L/100km for the coupe and convertible respectively.

The 220i coupe can sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds (7.7 convertible) when fitted with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option.

Newly-added standard equipment for the 220i coupe and convertible includes bi-xenon headlights, headlight washer system, folding exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle and parking functions, BMW’s Drive Assistant safety system; which includes lane departure warning, pedestrian warning and low-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB), along with a new driver’s instrument cluster and the Interior Lights Package.

Headlining the new model year, however, are the new 230i and M240i models, which replace the 228i and M235i respectively.

Stepping up to the 230i ($61,900 coupe, $71,900 convertible) gets you the uprated 185kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, which gets a 5kW bump over the outgoing 228i.

0-100km/h takes just 5.6 seconds in the 230i coupe when fitted with the eight-speed automatic, while the convertible gets to triple figures in 5.9 seconds.

Fuel consumption drops by 0.4L to 5.9L/100km for the coupe and 6.2L/100km for the convertible.

Over last year’s model, the 230i gets the M Sport package fitted as standard, while the Luxury Line package – which now includes a 12-speaker harmon/kardon sound system and electric lumbar support for the front seats as standard – continues to be offered as a no-cost option.

In addition to the M Sport package, the 230i gains M Sport brakes, M Sport rear spoiler (coupe only), 18-inch M light alloy wheels, folding exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle and parking functions, cloth and Alcantara upholstery (coupe)/Dakota leather (convertible), ‘Professional’ navigation system, Comfort Access, electrically-adjustable front seats, Driving Assistant, new instrument cluster and the Interior Lights Package.

Finally, the new M240i performance flagship starts at $74,900 plus on-roads for the coupe and $83,900 for the convertible – which is almost $3000 less than the previous M235i.

The new nomenclature brings an updated 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, producing 250kW (up 10kW) of power and 500Nm (up 50Nm) of torque.

With the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, the M240i coupe and convertible can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 and 4.7 seconds respectively – a 0.2-second improvement over the M235i.

However, the added performance doesn’t mean added fuel consumption, with BMW’s claim for the M240i dropping 0.6L from the M135i to 7.1L/100km (7.4L/100km convertible).

Added specification for the performance flagship include adaptive headlights with auto high beam, folding exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle and parking functions, 12-speaker harmon/kardon sound system, Comfort Access, electric front seat adjustment, electric lumbar support, heated front seats (coupe) and Driving Assistant.
